Later Days – By Docrocks

Marlena smiles. It’s a great day in New York, warm, sunny it’s just amazing. She’s on her way to her sister’s apartment.

Marlena has been living in New York, working as a psychiatrist. She knows the city well, and it’s her second home. She loves New York’s unpredictability, and mysteriousness. But still loves her hometown of Denver, Colorado.

It’s three blocks to Sam’s and she’s just come from work.

She’s dressed in an argyle vest and white blouse, with brown pinstripe pants to match.

Her long blonde hair flows over her shoulders in long ringlets, the bronze colours go well with the bright afternoon sun. She wears her aviator sunglasses, which block her hazel eyes from the sun.

Her shoulder bag is hung over her shoulder, as she lugs around her copy of “Jane and the Wandering Eye” by Stephanie Barron. Her cell phone, recorder, a bottle of lavender sky perfume and other miscellaneous items.

She holds her pink mini ipod in hand, and listens to soothing Mozart ballads. Even though she lives in the same city as her sister, she’s found it hard to make time to visit her. But she was given the gift of time today, and is now only one block away from Sam.

Marlena breathes a sigh of relief when she sees her sister’s building. She presses the intercom, and is greeted by her sister’s exhausted voice, shouting to people in the background.

“Aidan, Aidan…leave your brother alone! *Chris!* Could you please get Aidan off Michael!”

Marlena giggled, picturing her sister in mommy mode.

“Who is it?” Sam finally asked, remembering the buzz from downstairs.

“Three guesses who, Sami!” Marlena laughed.

“Marlena! Hey…come on up, sis!” Sam said finding a burst of energy.

Marlena made her way up, and came to her sister door, and gently knocked.

An exhausted Chris, opened the door, breathing heavily after his great chase after Michael. He smiled, tiredly.

“Hey…Mar…great…to..see…you!” He breathed.

Marlena smiled sympathetically. “Hey Chris, umm are you ok?” She asked.

“Yeah…yeah…fine, I mean…it’s just…the kids!” He said, looking inside. “Come in.” he finished guiding her in.

Sam was holding both Aidan and Michael apart, who were trying desperately to brake free and attack one another. When Marlena walked in, both boys realized they’re aunty had arrived and [Like all siblings] forgot they were fighting and ran straight into the arms of they’re aunty.

“Aunty Marlena!” they yelled as they ran over to her. Marlena hugged her little nephews. “Wow! You two really have grown!” She wasn’t lying, they both looked taller already.

“Yeah! Daddy says I’ve gwon haalf an inch!” A bouncy, five-year old Michael said.

Seven-year old Aidan, was eager to out do his younger brother. “Yeah well, I’m now in the under 8’s basketball team, and I used to be in the under 6’s team! But I’m not, no more!” He said, assuring her that he had no association with the under 6’s.

Marlena could see a sibling rivalry underway. She wasn’t sure whether it was her analysing the situation, or her remembering her old [*old* LOL! Yeah sure!] sibling rivalry with her twin sister. She shook her head.

“Well I have something for the two of you!” she said, opening her bag. The boys starting jumping up and down, waiting for their surprise. Marlena pulled out two big wrapped up boxes, and handed one to each of the boys.

The boys ripped into them immediately, and grinned, when to big tonka trucks were revealed. “Cool!” Aidan said. “Thanks Aunty Marlena!” he said before running to his room with his present.

“Yeah, thwank you Aunty Marwena!” Michael agreed, running after his brother with his own truck.

Marlena just smiled, and looked to Sam & Chris. Chris’ arm was around Sam’s shoulders, and she smiled. “You know, you’re worse than Mom. You two just spoil them!” She said smiling.

“Well, they’re my nephews. I’m allowed!” She countered. “I see they have a rivalry.” She commented.

“Like us, huh!” Sam said, finally walking in to embrace her sister.

“I’ll give you two some privacy, I’ll go play with those trucks…uuhh play with the kids I mean!” He blushed, showing his big kid side. As he exited the room.

“So.” Sam said leading Marlena to the couch. “How’ve you been? What have you been up too? How’s work been? I have a million questions, Mar!” Sam said.

Marlena filled her in on the business end of her life, but that’s not what Sam was most interested in. “So…” Sam finally said.

“So…?” Marlena mimicked back. “What’s the so for?” she asked.

“Is they’re anyone new in your life? Anyone special? What about that tall, dark-haired law guy…umm Don…Don…Craig!, Don Craig. Yeah what about him. Are you two still an item? Or what?” She asked eager for goss.

Marlena was used to her sisters intrusion in her life, after all they were twins, and used to share very detail of their lives with one another. Hang on. Used to? Strike that, I mean *do* share every detail of their lives with one another.

“No, Sam. I broke it off, it just wasn’t working.” She said. It was a lame excuse. Sam shook her head. They went out for months and all she can say is, it wasn’t *working*! They were a great couple and I really thought he was the one! Marlena spotted her sisters unconvinced look. “Ok well, when he proposed I…” Marlena tried to explain.

“He what?!!” She shouted. “He proposed to you and you *broke up* with him! What kind of an answer is that! You jerk!” Sam said hitting her sister on the arm, at her foolishness.

Marlena shook her head. “Hey! It didn’t happen like that! I broke up with him a few *days* after he proposed. Ok. He knew I wasn’t ready for anything serious, and marriage is pretty much as serious as it gets.” She said defending herself.

Sam shook her head. “When are you going to get over this *crazy* fear of commitment! I mean for a shrink, you’re a little *crazy*!” Sam said, lecturing her slightly younger sibling.

Marlena rolled her eyes, it wasn’t a *fear*. It’s just that she like her relationships to be laid-back, casual, like her. Not serious. The only big decisions she ever made in her life, regarded her career. Not her social-life.

“Look, don’t worry about me or my social life.” Marlena told Sam.

“There’s another thing! You say *social* life! Like these guys are just companions! Why won’t you say love-life?!!” Sam argued, trying to find sense in her sister words.

“Love-life, is so personal, sappy and sad like a bad soap. Plus it implies that I have some kind of heart felt attachment to these people.” She said stubbornly.

“Heart felt *attachment?* You mean *love* Marlena! You act like it’s a bad word! Haven’t you ever been in love?” She said, trying to make sense of it all.

“Look Sam, I know you’re looking out for me. But I’m fine and I’m happy, ok.” She said avoiding Sam’s question.

Honestly?

Marlena didn’t believe in love. She believed that people could care dearly about each other, but love? No. No, love expected too much of people. And Marlena thought no human being was selfless enough to really be able to truly love someone. Maybe she was too technical, but she was a woman of logic.

And love was unlogical to her, unreasonable. Men usually like her terms. But she had a great time with Don, unfortunately he’d thought that he’d been able to change her mind about love, relationships and marriage. But sadly he was wrong. Marlena realised they wanted totally different things and broke it off. So that was that.

Back to life as usual for her.

“So you really don’t mind?” Sam asked Marlena again as she finished packing the bag for the kids.

“I told you Sam, I’d be happy to look after the kids. I mean we’ll have a great time, the sun’s out, Central park’s only a few blocks away! It’ll be great!” She reassured her sister.

“Ok, just remember to keep an eye on them, give them the right lunches, they’re labelled. Watch Aidan, because he likes to go off on his own, ooh and keep Mickey away from cats. Ok. Did you get that?” She asked, sounding nervous.

“Oh I’ll be sure to keep Mickey away from any people who might happen to be walking their cat through Central Park!” She laughed.

Sam gave her an annoyed look. “Jesus Sam, it wasn’t that long ago that we were kids too, just going out to parties, getting mildly hammered! Now you’re a full-time soccer mom!” She laughed.

“Yeah well people change Marlena. People *grow* up. And for the record I am *not* a soccer mom. I drive the kids to basketball ok. Get it right.” She said, missing the point.

Marlena just shook her head. I guess things have changed. Sam and I aren’t as similar as I thought. She went for family first, career later. Nope that’s not me. Someday I might have a family. But *not* when I’m twenty-four. No way!

“Ok everythings ready. Now I’ll just get the kids, then you can go.” Sam said handing her the bulging bags.

“Oooh and here’s the emergency contact numbers. Now you’ve got my cell number. So here’s Chris’. And this is Glenda’s, you know Chris’ mom right?” Sam said handing her a bunch of numbers.

“Uh, sure.” She lied.

“This one here is Mrs Maverick’s, she’s our nanny, and if anything happens to the kids, make sure you dial 9..1..1, ok.” Sam said acting like she was talking to some foreigner.

“Sam, I get it. Please stop this worried mother routine. It’s kinda scary.” She said, wondering what the hell had become of her once wild twin sister.

Sam rolled her eyes. “Aidan, Michael it’s time to go!” She shouted to her sons.

After a few last minute drills, hugs and kisses. Marlena was finally allowed to drag the boys away from their mother. So they were off.

After a few last minute drills, hugs and kisses. Marlena was finally allowed to drag the boys away from their mother. So they were off.

After some minor detours, [ice-cream of course] the trio had made it to the park. Which was full of kids. Great. She thought.

Don’t get Marlena wrong, she loves kids. It’s just that it’s hell to try to keep track of both these kids when they’ve already been hyped up on sugar. [God damn ice-cream]

“Now guys, just hang tight for a second.” She instructed them. Please tell me Sam, packed beepers or something in here!

Marlena began searching through the bag. She did however come across a packet with a picture of a child in what looked like a child harness and leash. There was a note addressed to her with it.

Marlena,

This is just in case you can’t keep the kids under control, ok. I wouldn’t buy one if I thought you could handle them.

Sam

Marlena re-read the last sentence several times. Well this shows confidence! Plus she didn’t even know I was coming today!

When the hell did she buy this thing! She thought screwing up the piece of paper. And no way in hell am I using this thing! I’ll just give them simple instructions. And I’m sure they’ll follow.

[Ah huh, *cough* *cough*] “Ok. Aidan, Michael. I want you guys to both stay at the playground over there, ok. Remember no talking to stranger’s unless they’re like five-year old’s ok. And err, if there’s an emergency, just yell hysterically ok.”

She added, knowing that sentence couldn’t be right. Both kids nodded, having know idea what hysterically meant. They ran over to the playground, leaving Marlena with one question.

So what the hell am *I* supposed to do?!!! She slumped onto the bench, looking border than ever.

Marlena had been using this time to read her book. Every now and then she glanced at the kids to make sure they were ok. Marlena sighed and put down her book. I’ll go play with the kids.

So she walked over to them and picked Aidan up, as he ran across the playground. “Having fun Aidan?’ She asked as she began to tickle him. He giggled and nodded.

“Where’s your brother?” She asked scanning the playground. Aidan pointed towards the sandpit, where she saw Mickey push a little boy.

“*Mikey!*” She yelled as she ran over to Mikey, and pulled him away from the boy. “*Mikey*! Stop it!” She said angrily.

She suddenly saw a man run over to the boy. “Brady! Are you alright son?” he asked the little boy.

“Mikey, why did you push him?” She asked. Mickey didn’t normally push kids.

“He said I stwole his gwey hulk!” Mikey cried.

Marlena noticed man hugging the boy. “I’m very sorry, Mr. Err?” Marlena said.

The man didn’t bother replying and angrily burst out, “Keep a better eye on your son!” he yelled.

Marlena felt bad, but couldn’t help but be annoyed by the mans accusation against her nephew.

“Look, I’m very sorry, but I’m sure there’s another side to this!” She said, anger building. “And he’s not my son, he’s my nephew!” she added bitterly.

The little boy said something to his dad, and suddenly his eyes grew angrier.

“My son says that *he* stole his toy!” He said pointing at Michael.

She looked really pissed now, but asked Mickey nonetheless. “Mickey? Did you take that boy’s toy?” She asked gently.

The man felt a pang in his heart. She seemed to talk so softly and soothingly to the boy, just like Isabella had.

“Nwoo!” He said softly staring at the ground.

“Well then!” She said, tone changing to anger. “He said he didn’t and I believe him.” She said defending her nephew. “Look, I’m very sorry he pushed him and I’ll make sure he never does that again.” She finished, still bitter.

The man didn’t look convinced, “My son said your nephew took it from him and then pushed my son so he wouldn’t get it back!” He barked back, anger rising.

“He said he didn’t do it! So you can leave him alone!” She countered back.

“And how do you know he isn’t lying?” He demanded, rather than asked.

“Because he isn’t like that! And who the hell are you to judge that?” She asked angrily. “Come on, Aidan, Mickey! Let’s go!”

Marlena finished, now fuming as she stormed off with boys out of the park. Turning quite a few heads, who had all been listening to the fight.

What a jerk! Cute jerk though. Damn it. She cursed herself for thinking that.

The walk back to Sam’s was pretty quiet, except for a bubbly Aidan who was humming happy tunes all the way. Michael was silent and just stared at the sidewalk all the way there.

Marlena kept thinking about that man. Was I to harsh? She thought. No, no. Michael was sorry, but he shouldn’t have been accused like that. But Marlena felt bad, she’d been pretty angry and his son had looked very upset.

Marlena sighed. Well I can’t do anything about it now, it’s in the past. He’s in the past. Marlena felt a wave of sadness wash over her, and she didn’t know why.

They came to Sam’s door and were about to go in when Michael tugged on Marlena’s shirt. “Yeah Mikey?” She asked.

“I needa tell you somethin’.” He whispered.

“Umm ok. Aidan wait for us inside, and tell your Mom well be in, in a minute. Ok?” She said.

Aidan nodded and ran in, to tell his parents all about his day at the park.

Marlena squatted down to Michael’s level and then asked “What’s up?”

Michael kept his gaze directly on the ground, refusing to look her in the eye.

Mikey began to mumble something, while swaying nervously from side to side.

“What was that?” She asked sounding confused.

Mikey gazed at her with wide eyes, full of worry. And finally pulled something out of his backpack and passed it to his aunty. Marlena gasped as she looked at it.

In her hand she held a grey hulk toy, and she knew for certain it wasn’t from Michael’s toy collection. She stared at the toy and recalled something.

“He said I stwole his gwey hulk!” Mikey cried.

“My son said your nephew took it from him and then pushed my son so he wouldn’t get it back!” He barked back, anger rising.

Marlena pieced it together and looked down at the toy, than at Michael, who kept his gaze on the floor beneath him. “I *can’t* believe this Michael!” She said angrily.

Marlena was about to go on, when she was interrupted by a stuttering Michael.

“I..I..got..dis..too! Pwease don’t…b..be..mwad!” He cried as he passed a crumpled up card to her.

Damn those puppy dog eyes! Marlena thought staring into his eyes. She took the item from him.

It was a business card.

It was the business card of the man in the park. It held a photo of his face. At the bottom was the contact number and email address.

Shit. Marlena thought. So that wasn’t just any guy, he was the CEO of some big corporate company. And I yelled at him! And my nephew stole his son’s toy!

Marlena was so tempted to just throw this toy away and have Michael punished appropriately. But her conscience knew that wasn’t right. This was a little boy’s toy. She recalled her own toys when she was kid. If this had happened to her or Michael she’d be damn well pissed.

I’ve got to give this back, it’s not right. God, he could probably get me fired and have me driven straight out of New York! Well I’ve gotta do this. She looked at Michael then back at the toy.

“Michael I’m returning this toy to that little boy, *and* I want you to write a written apology to Mr Black and his son.” She said slowly.

He nodded quickly, he’d do anything now to be forgiven, even if he didn’t know how to write. “And I’m telling your Mom.” She finished, nodding for him to go inside. He sighed, and slumped in.

Marlena breathed deeply. This is going to be hell. She read the card again carefully.

Wait a second, Basic Black isn’t in New York. It’s in Salem. And where the fuck is Salem??!!!

Marlena was sitting at her desk in her New York office. She was going over a patients file, and checking over their progress.

She glanced into her draw and a grey toy stared back at her. She sighed and picked up the grey hulk. She’d called Basic Black the day she found the toy, and had tried to contact John Black, but had been very unsuccessful.

The secretary’s had all been unwilling to help her, no matter how many times she explained the story. They’d simply told her, that Mr Black was not looking for a ‘grey hulk toy’. She was also told not to call there unless she had an appointment; she had then been rudely hung up on.

The buzz of the intercom, interrupted her flashback and her secretary’s[Note: Her name is Rita] shrill, bored voice came over the speaker. “Dr Breeden, to see you Dr Evans.”

Marlena winced. [Rita’s voice had that affect on her] “Err ok send him in.” She replied, shaking it off.

A short, stubby grey haired man entered her office, dressed in a white lab coat. Carrying In his arms a packed yellow envelope.

“Morning.” Dr Breeden said, sourly as he sat in the chair in front of her desk.

“Err, morning.” Marlena replied, knowing her boss didn’t care for conversation with her.

Marlena had graduated med school early, [No she wasn’t a child genius, just a determined, goal orientated student] and therefore her grades and recommendation from professors, saw her immediately up for graduation. Marlena had then worked at a local hospital in Denver. There, she had gained hospital experience. Her achievements had seen her enlisted for Head of the psychiatric ward at his hospital.

This had enraged Breeden, who didn’t like this ‘girl’, who at twenty-four was already qualified for a head of department job. He found it insane, but had been lacking qualified people and had to hire her. [Plus he’d get into a huge amount of trouble with the board, if he refused to hire her because of her age.] He refused to admit that she was a great doctor and that the patients and staff trusted her.

He was however looking for any opportunity to relocate her, mainly for his pride and old-fashioned values. So this was his chance, and he’d jumped on it.

“Well Dr Evans, we need you down in Salem.” He smiled as if he was new to this gesture. It wasn’t a very pleasing sight.

“Salem?” She said. Yeah Marlena, that place you were *supposed* to go.

“Yes, a patient needs your *urgent* expertise, and I *knew* that you were the one for the job.” He smirked.

Uh-huh, like I can’t see through your act asshole. She thought offering a weak smile. “Well does this patient have a file, I need to know what I’m dealing with here.” She informed.

“Yes, here.” He said with an edge to his voice.

“Thankyou.” She replied, not meaning it.

She scanned the file. “Where are the personal details? Like their name?” She asked.

“They’ve requested, absolute confidence and would like to meet you first. Before any decisions are made. But I’m sure they’ll want to keep you in Salem. I made sure to tell them all about little you.” He said, it sounded like a hiss.

“Well, what about my commitments to my patients here? I can’t just blow them off, for this patient.” She said.

“All your patients are being taken care of.” He said, remembering to cover all the bases.

“Well, I’ve never been to Salem, I don’t know anyone. I don’t even have accommodation!” She commented.

“Well a room has been organised at the Salem Inn, over there.” He nodded.

“An Inn? Well…” She thought. If she was going to go, she was going to make sure, she left a hole in Breeden’s pocket. “Umm, I’m not a big fan of Inn’s. So I think I’ll pass.” She smiled, slyly. As she walked to the door.

“Wait, wait!” He shouted after her. She smiled and turned around.

“Yes?” She asked.

“How about a penthouse? I’ll cover all the costs, including the flight.” He said, quickly. Hoping to seal the deal.

“Well…” She questioned. “I’ll be needing a car…” She finished.

“Ok, sure. I’ll throw in a black Mercedes, with a full tank of fuel.” He finished.

She smiled. [Victory!] “Ok, deal!” She said. Satisfied that she had milked it, for all it’s worth.

“When do I leave?” She asked.

“Oh, well I have that all organised.” He smirked, resembling an evil elf.

“So time to go.” He smiled.

“Steve, Owen, Tony, Glen!” He shouted. As four movers walked in. “Pack, Dr Evans’ office up for her. And do it quickly, because she has a plane to catch.” He said, looking like a child who’d been given a truckload of candy.

He then dropped a cardboard box on her desk, with her name marked in huge bold, underlined letters on it.

  1. MARLENA EVANS

“You better get a move on. That plane’s in an hour.” He smirked, feeling satisfied.

Marlena stared at him in disbelief.

Ok strike that, Breeden one. Evans zero.

Marlena passed her ticket to the attendant, and began to board the plane.

She was packed and ready to head to the unknown. Salem.

The rest of her belongings were being sent over later. Breeden had guaranteed her, she’d have everything she needs waiting for her at her new apartment.

Marlena just hoped she’d be able to get used to this place. After all she was sure that Breeden was already redecorating her office as we speak. [Speak, write whatever!]

As far as she knew, New York was still her home, and this was going to be a temporary home. She was hoping to only be there for a few months, maybe a year. But she planned to return to New York and probably at a new hospital too.

Marlena made her way onto the plane. She yearned for some piece and quiet. And planned to read her mystery patients file.

The plane was surprisingly full, and she was forced to choose between sitting next to a twenty-something year old red-headed woman. Or a sweaty, pudgy man, who gave her an inviting wink. Ok, eew. Marlena thought. Choosing the redhead.

“Umm, is this seat taken?” She asked, secretly hoping otherwise.

“Oh, no. Please.” She said waving her in.

“Thanks.” Marlena replied as she smiled.

“I’m Maggie Simmons.” She said offering her hand.

“Marlena Evans.” Marlena said shaking her hand.

Once Marlena was settled, Maggie began her questioning.

“So are you visiting family in Salem?” Maggie asked. [Maggie new most of the families in Salem, and doubted that this woman belonged to one of them.]

“Umm, no. I’m a doctor, and I’m visiting a patient.” She replied, wondering if this would result in small talk all the way.

“Wow! Really? You’re a doctor huh!” She said, not picking this blonde woman, as the doctor type.

“Yeah, psychiatrist.” She said. Why does nobody ever believe I’m a doctor!

“So why are you going to Salem?” Marlena asked, suddenly curious..

“Oh!” Maggie smiled. “Returning home actually.” She nodded. “To my fiancé.” Maggie said winking towards her sparkling diamond.

Marlena smiled. “Wow, congratulations.” She said. Well if I had a ring like that, I’d brag too. “So whose the lucky guy?”

“Well his name is Mickey Horton. He just graduated law school and we’re actually hoping to start up a restaurant in Salem, called Chez Rouge.” She said happily.

“Wow, that’s great.” Marlena said feeling happy for the couple. Geez, early marriage seems to be back.. “So what’s Salem like?” Marlena asked.

“Oh, it’s wonderful! I loved it the moment I moved there. Great people, great shops, great restaurants, great schools, you name it! Salem’s got it! You’ll love it! So where’re you staying?” She asked.

“Well I’m renting an apartment for now. It’s on 24 Riverview Drive.” She said.

“Hey I know that building. The penthouses there are beautiful.” She smiled.

“Well tomorrow, us Salemites are planning a barbeque. It’s the annual Brady/Horton barbeque, and Salem’s best will be there. So you wanna come? It’ll be a great way for you to get to know everyone!” She offered.

Well I don’t know anyone in Salem, so It’ll be a pretty lonely stay unless I get to know people. “Ok, sure I’d love to!” She nodded happily.

“Great!” Maggie smiled back, giving details.

The two continued to chat and laugh the entire trip.

Well Marlena had made a friend. She’d also completely forgotten about that file. Oh well. I hope Salem’s prepared. Marlena’s coming to town!

Marlena said goodbye to Maggie, and decided to get settled into her new home.

No, no. Aah, there it is…24 Riverview Dr, Salem.

Woah! She thought. The building was huge. Marlena payed the cab driver, and walked into the enormous building. The bell-boy greeted her, and offered to take her bags up to her room. Marlena continued her inspection as they walked onto the elevator.

“My name’s Derek by the way.” He piped in, liking the blonde woman already.

“Marlena.” She said offering her hand.

He shook it and smiled goofily. “So did you just move to Salem?” He asked.

“Yeah, today actually. But I’m not sure how long I’ll be here.” She replied, realising that she’d probably have to explain herself to a lot of people in Salem.

“Oh, ok.” He said rather sadly. “Ah, here we are.” He chimed in.

She smiled back, and walked up to number fourteen. Her door. And took out the keys.

She carefully opened the door, revealing the well-decorated, fully furnished apartment within. Wow! This is beautiful!

Marlena tipped Derek, and thanked him as he exited. She took a stroll around.

Wow, French doors, lounge, staircase, kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom with jaccuzi!

Marlena was impressed it was tasteful and inviting. With a great view. The place had everything she needed, it even had a fully-stocked fridge. Marlena had to admit, Breeden had planned this well.

She began to unpack her luggage. And was stopped when she found something at the bottom of a box. Grey hulk.

Oh no way. The movers must have packed it. After her rude rejection, by the Basic Black workers, she’d planned to forget about it. But it was obvious a force greater than herself, was trying to make sure she didn’t forget. Ever.

She collapsed into a chair, still holding the toy. Why do you keep haunting me, huh? I guess that little boy misses you. She couldn’t stand breaking a kid’s heart. Ok, I’ll try Basic Black again. But this time, I’m going straight down there and talking to Black himself. No matter what.

Marlena had made her decision, and was now feeling the effects of jet lag. I think I’ll knock off for the night. And sleepily, Marlena fell into a peaceful slumber. In her new bed and new home.

~~~~~
The ongoing ring of her phone, awakened Marlena from her dreamy sleep. She groaned loudly, feeling incredibly annoyed and grumpy. She attempted to block out the ring with her pillow, but was unsuccessful, the phone just kept on ringing.
She groaned again, and snatched at the phone. “YES!” She said loudly into the mouthpiece, without thinking twice about who may be calling her.
“Man! What’s with you today Mar? Salem not what it’s cracked up to be, huh?” Sam cheekily commented to her sibling.
“Sorry, I was sleeping and I *really*wasn’t in the mood to take any calls.” She explained, with little sorrow.
“I can tell, but what if I’d been a patient or work?” She asked.
“Well I don’t start work, for a while. Plus I doubt Breeden would call.” She said, beginning to lighten up.
“Hmm. Anyway so how’s life in the Midwest?” She asked happily.
Marlena went on to explain all about her time in Salem up to this point.
“So are you going to this barbeque thing or what?” Sam asked her.
“Yeah I guess so, I don’t wanna spend these next few months, confined to my apartment.” Marlena explained.
“Of course. I don’t wanna think about, what you’d be like after a year of isolation!” She laughed. “Well I’ve gotta go, Chris is taking Aidan to soccer. And I’ve gotta go get him ready. We’ll visit you as soon as we can, ok Mar. Love ya!” She said to her sister.
“Yeah, yeah.” Marlena sighed happily. “Love you too. Cya.” Marlena replied, putting the phone down.
Marlena grabbed her watch from the side table. 10.57am, that’s more sleep than I’ve had in ages. Well I think I’ll take a stroll round Salem, see what it’s got to offer.
Marlena hopped out of bed, and jumped into a warm shower. Awaiting the wonders of Salem.
Marlena had been walking through Salem Place, shopping and enjoying the sights. She sighed, letting the warm breeze wash over her.
I haven’t been this peaceful since I lived in Colorado. She loved New York, and the fast pace, but didn’t mind slowing down occasionally, and Salem did that for her. Marlena continued her shopping, but came to a halt right outside a jewellery store.
The Giftbox. The sign said. Marlena loved jewellery as much as the next girl, but preferred items that had meaning. Like the pearls her mother had given to her. A legacy. An antique. She dreamed that one day she would pass them on to her kids, make it tradition.
Her attention had been drawn to a cute little charm bracelet. It had beautiful charms, dangling on a thin gold chain. She studied the charms. Hmm, a star, an angel, an anchor, huh? A couch! She laughed. It was cute. Marlena was about to step in and take a closer look at it, when she heard her name.
“Marlena! Marlena! Over here!” The voice shouted.
Marlena turned around, and saw Maggie waving at her. Marlena began her descend over to her. “Hi!” Marlena said.
“Hey! So checking out Salem, huh!” She hinted.
“Yeah, something like that.” She nodded.
“Well I’m just getting some stuff for the barbeque this arvo. [I’m finding it hard to imagine Maggie saying arvo!] Are you still coming?” She asked, feeling hopeful.
“Yeah, if you’ll still have me.” Marlena smiled.
“Of course. Well would you mind helping me shop? Shopping’s always funner with two!” Maggie winked.
“Yeah, ok, sure.” Marlena replied, forgetting the bracelet as she left with Maggie.
“Wow! That was a *long* trip!” Maggie laughed, as she guided Marlena through the door of her house. “Fighting that crazy woman Bonnie, for the last bread roll was vicious!” She laughed recalling the moment.
Marlena laughed. “Yeah well, she shouldn’t have tried to take you on!”
Maggie smiled. “Well Mickey will be here soon, and so will his mom and dad. Alice & Tom Horton.” She explained.
“Oh, ok. In-laws huh!” Marlena said sympathetically, with a hint of sarcasm.
“Yeah, but I’m lucky. They’re great! Really nice, and very supportive of us.” She nodded.
“That’s great.” Marlena said, feeling genuinely happy for her.
The ring of the doorbell, announced the arrival of guests. Maggie walked over and opened the mahogany door.
“Maggie dear!” Alice said, smiling next to Tom. Marlena stood in the lounge waiting for introduction. “Hi, come in!” Maggie said relieving them of the brown paper bags. “Oh, and this is Marlena Evans.” She announced to them.
“And these two are Tom and Alice Horton.” Maggie said, as she went into the kitchen.
“Well it’s a pleasure to meet you, Miss Evans.” Alice said warmly, sensing something very good about this girl.
“Oh please, call me Marlena.” She replied, feeling much more comfortable.
They smiled at her. “So how do you know Maggie?” Tom asked.
“Well we met on the plane over here, and she kindly offered me a seat…” Marlena began.
“And we just hit it off!” Maggie finished, re-entering the room.
“Wonderful!” Alice said happily.
“So what do you do for a living Marlena?” Tom asked.
“Oh I’m a psychiatrist.” Marlena replied.
“A psychiatrist? Really?” He didn’t pick her as a shrink.
“Yes.” Marlena said. Do I just give off bad vibes!? Why does nobody see me as a doctor!?
“Well I myself am a doctor.” Tom smiled. “I’m the chief of staff at University Hospital, here in Salem.” He smiled, finding new respect for this young woman.
“Oh yeah, now I remember. You run the Horton Centre right?” She asked.
“Yes.” He smiled.
“You said you were on the plane with Maggie, so that means you must be from New York?” Alice asked.
“Yes, I’m here to visit a patient.” She explained.
“So you’re not staying in Salem?” He said, sadly. “I’m actually looking for another psychiatrist, to head up the psychiatric ward, at University hospital.”
“Well that all depends, I may stay in Salem.” She said quickly.
WHAT!!?? What the hell are you talking about! Oh my God, that just came out! You live in New York Marlena! Well it’s not like I’ll have much a of a job waiting for me at home anyway…
Marlena snapped out of her daze, long enough to hear Alice’s “I do hope you have a chance to stay in Salem for longer.”
Marlena smiled back at the two. Silently agreeing with them.
The four had soon made their way to the park, where the Horton/Brady and let’s face it, other Salemites would gather for the party. The decorations were set up, and many people were already there, and bringing food to the many picnic tables. Marlena began to feel more like a stranger as Maggie, Alice and Tom, greeted and hugged various people.
“Shawn! This barbeque is looking delicious already!” Alice commented.
Shawn smiled, “Yes, unfortunately we won’t ave’ Roman’s burgers ere’ today. He’s out o’ town.” The Irishman said sadly. [Roman won’t be showing his face in this story anytime soon! :] [P.S. I suck at writing Irish accents, ok!]
“Oh, that’s too bad.” Alice said sadly. She looked over at Marlena who stood awkwardly, at Maggie’s side. “Oh! And this young lady here.” Alice said taking Marlena’s hand. “Is Marlena Evans. Doctor Marlena Evans.” She added with wink.
“O’ well it’s great to meet ya!” He said shaking the young woman’s hand.
“I’d be Shawn Brady and this is me wife Caroline.” He said, taking his wife’s hand.
The woman smiled. “Nice to meet you, Marlena. A doctor huh?” She smiled.
Marlena blushed, “Yeah psychiatrist.”
“Well any friend of the Horton’s tis a friend o’ the Brady’s.” Shawn said, feeling that same warm feeling around the woman. Roman would like her! Or maybe even John… Shawn thought.
The rest of the day was spent with Marlena meeting many of the people of Salem. She found new friends in Hope and Bo, who warmed up to her immediately. As well as Jack and Jen. Laura, who was also a shrink, instantly became one of her friends. Eugene Bradford, despite his obvious geekness, was quickly another friend.
Doug and Julie, told her all about Salem, and filled her in on the families.
Victor Kiriakis, seemed to get along with her well, and was definetly a friendly face. [From what she’d read, she thought he’d just be some gangster type, business tycoon. Well wrong honey! ;]
Abe and Lexie were very easy to get along with and welcomed Marlena to Salem with open arms. [She met the other people of Salem, etc.]
Marlena smiled, everyone was so nice and charming. She really could get use to this place. As she made her way over to another table. A figure at the back of the park, caught her attention.
Oh my God…John freakin Black!
Marlena sighed. She had too talk to him. The really annoying thing was that, when she’d said she’d go down to Basic Black, she’d hope to be able to drop the toy off and get out of there without having to talk to Black.
Why? Well Marlena, had felt this thing was driving her crazy. He probably won’t remember me. Or of he does, he could get really pissed…He’s probably just some stuck up corporate suit.
No. I’ve gotta do this. Just give him the toy, explain the story. And if he belives you, he’ll just take the toy, and you can walk away. If he thinks you’re crazy or gets angry, just err…umm. Say something smart. [Shittest plan ever, but whatever.]
Marlena had played out several scenarios in her mind, and had decided to bite the bullet, face the music. [blah, blah.] She was just going to do it.
Marlena held her head up high, and as she made her way over, she was overcome by a wave of nervousness. Pull yourself together! You’re better than this! Her normally confident attitude was being questioned with this challenge.
She was suddenly pulled away, by Hope. Who was eager to show her the pictures, of the boat that she and Bo were about to buy. Man!
“Great party as usual Caroline.” John said smiling at the woman.
“Mmm, it really is. Too bad Brady couldn’t come.” She said solemnly.
“Yeah, he’s been really upset since he lost his toy. It was his favourite too. I think it’s back in New York.” John said, feeling very bad for his son.
“Well why don’t you bring him by tomorrow, so he can going fishing with Shawn and Bo.” She offered. “And why don’t you come along too.”
“Umm, tomorrow. I can’t. But I’m sure Brady would love it.” He said quickly, hoping not to raise questions, about his rejection.
Caroline saw through it, and felt concerned. “John your not working tomorrow are you. You’re supposed to be taking a break.” She said sounding like a mother.
“It’s not work. Look…” He sighed before continuing. “I’m doing something Isabella encouraged me to do before, she…” He croaked, fighting the onslaught of emotions, as he recalled their discussion.
Caroline nodded and rubbed his back, in a mothering way. “John you know we’ll always be there for you. *Always*.” She finished looking him in the eyes.
“Yeah I know.” He smiled, as he went on with the story. “I said I’d see a psychiatrist about my amnesia. She said she was worried about me and wanted me to talk to a professional, because I was having dreams about my past. Then flashbacks and well…we were hoping for a breakthrough.” He confessed.
Caroline nodded, remembering Isabella’s dedication to John, and the effort she put into trying to help him unravel this mystery of his past. “That’s good John. Very good, I’m very proud of you.” She smiled.
“Yeah well I wouldn’t have done it if Izzy B hadn’t suggested it.” He said, with a grin. Caroline smiled. The sound of John’s beeper interrupted the tender moment.
“It’s Chelsea. I’ve gotta go. Thankyou. And tell everyone I said goodbye ok, Caroline.” He said before rushing off.
Caroline shook her head and hoped, that this psychiatrist would be able to help John, and put this search for his past, to rest. Once and for all.
Hope had finally finished, and had gone to find Jen. Marlena sighed her relief, and turned her head to where John was sitting. Wait! Where John *had* been sitting? What the? Where is he?
She searched the park and there was absolutely no sign of him anywhere. Freakin hell. How can so much happen in… Marlena checked her watch. Twenty five minutes! Shit! A boat can’t be *that* interesting!
Well I did make some new friends. And I had a pretty good time. So this wasn’t a total bust. Well far from it really. Well I can’t go to Basic Black tomorrow, I have my first session with my patient tomorrow. [Another clue for those who are still scratching their heads ;] I’ll drop the toy off another day. Ooh that reminds me, I better go prepare for that patient.
Marlena said goodbye and thankyou to everyone, and was confident she’d see these people again. “It was great meeting you Marlena. You’ve got to come by our place sometime.” Jack and Jen said before hugging her goodbye. This was the trend followed by well, everyone! At the pary as they said goodbye to Salem’s newest resident. She was well liked already. And was definitely going to become a familiar face around there.
Ok, come on John you can do this. You’ll just have a quick talk with them. That’s all. Just remember, don’t sit on the couch. The minute you sit on the couch you end up talking and talking. Well that’s what Bo said. Hmm, taking shrink advice from Bo? Nu-uh that’s not right.
As you can see, John was giving himself a pep talk. He was very nervous. And had the urge to just cancel his appointment. But he knew he couldn’t do that. He was curious, and needed help. But more importantly, he’d promised Isabella he wouldn’t face this alone. He would never break that promise.
He looked around his office, searching for a clock. He breathed a sigh of relief. Two hours. I have two whole hours before the appointment. Even though he felt relief knowing it wasn’t right away. There was the endless feeling of anticipation. He was putting off the inevitable.
Frankly. He didn’t care. He just needed time. Time to plan what he was going to say. He’d been told the doctor had flown from New York, and that he was getting an amnesia specialist. It occurred to him that this was really happening, and that sinking feeling once again came over him.
John was nervous mostly about the confidence he’d have between this doctor. What he would tell them, was vital information. He shuddered. He knew what could happen if any of it leaked out. He had to be able to trust this doctor with his life, because he was putting his entire world into their hands. It would be in their possession. It was a weapon that could be used against him, and he had told no-one not even Isabella, the deepest, darkest extent of some of his memories.
He shuddered again and said a silent prayer for strength and understanding.
Marlena checked herself in the mirror. Strangely enough seeing as this person was a complete mystery, she wanted to make sure she presented herself in the best way possible. She honestly felt like she was on a blind date. But of course, this was a patient, who could easily be a female. Though, after reading the file, it seemed much more likely to be a man.
Marlena’s train of thought was interrupted by the ring of the phone.
“Hello?” She said.
“Marlena!” The happy voice said on the other end.
“Tom?” Marlena said. She knew it was him, but was surprised to hear from him.
“Yes, did I catch you at a bad time?” He asked.
“Umm, well sort of. I’m about to go meet my patient.” She said.
“Oh. Then I caught you just in time then.” He breathed, happily.
Marlena’s puzzled silence, signalled permission for Tom to explain his words.
“Well that patient of yours, who happens to be a friend of mine. Is meeting you at Basic Black, correct?” He asked.
Marlena hesitated. First of all, he knew who her patient was. Even *I* don’t know who they are! Second, he was asking her information about them, and she’d been told to keep every detail to herself. And third, Basic Black? Huh? Marlena gabbed the files and scanned through looking for the location of their meeting place.
Meeting Place: Basic Black, 9.30am Wednesday.
“Don’t worry Marlena, I already know the answer. I just though I’d ask anyway.” He reassured her.
“I called you today to tell you, that while you’re in Salem, I would like you to work here, at University Hospital. This way you would have a home base, for yourself, where you could meet them for every session. I’d of course provide you with an office and all the necessaries. As well as a pay-check.” He finished hoping to reel her in.
“Oh no. I couldn’t actually take your money. I’d be well…borrowing an office and expecting a check? It’s not right.” She said quickly, trying to refuse his generous offer.
“Well Marlena, the main thing is getting you here. So I’ll go by whatever conditions necessary.” He said.
“Really Tom. I couldn’t.” She said, she felt like she was getting hand-outs.
“Well Marlena. Tell me. Where were you planning to go for your sessions? I’m sure you wouldn’t like to continue your sessions at Basic Black, now?” He asked, hoping to catch her off guard.
“Well…I…I mean…err.” Marlena mumbled. Shit. He’s got me there. What *was* I going to do!!!???
“Hmm. How do you feel, about that office now?” he asked.
“Yeah I hear you Tom, but I don’t take hand outs. You understand right?” She asked. Marlena earned everything she had. Despite coming from a wealthy family, she had refused hand-outs then. And she still did. [P.S. Now the freebies she got from Breeden, were different! She was just trying to piss him off! LOL! So there *is* a difference.]
“Well Marlena, if you’re concerned about pulling your own weight. I can get you some extra patients. We’re short on psychiatrists and you’d be doing me a favour. So could you give me a hand?” He asked. He knew he had her.
Guilt trip huh! Fine. You win Tom. She smiled. “Ok Tom, I’m in.”
“Perfect. Come by after your first session. It’s got everything you’ll need, and for every other session with your patient, you can meet there. Ooh and its even got Doctor Marlena Evans engraved on your gold name plate. Bye now!” He smirked happily before hanging up.
She sat there, mouth wide open. He had planned that all along! She couldn’t hold back her laughter. Marlena was eager to get down there, she was already sure she’d love it. Salem was growing on her. Fast.
Marlena stepped into her brand new black Mercedes. It had finally arrived. Not that she was complaining about the wait, after all she *was* getting a free car. The leather seats were very comfy, and it had that brand new car feel. It was almost as if the car new how great it was. It even had one of those electronic maps, with the woman giving directions to your destination.
She put in Basic Black, and was soon given the most direct route there. As she drove her thoughts lingered. Basic Black? Now that’s really strange. I guess it’s a high-paid, stressed out executive. Probably a workaholic or some guy that cheated on his wife with a co-worker. Hmm, tons of possibilities. I’ll just have to find out when I get there.
Marlena parked near Basic Black, and walked into the building, having that same wave of nerves. She saw the Basic Black logo, hanging on the wall of the lobby and new she was in the right place. “Basic Black. How may I help you?” the secretary repeated over and over.
Marlena walked up to the front desk, waiting for assistance. The secretary then noticed her and a million thoughts ran through her mind. “Yes? Can I help you?” The woman asked, not sounding like she meant a word of her sentence.
“I’m meeting someone down here at 9.30am, and I’m not sure where exactly. So could you give me any details?” She asked hopefully.
The woman seemed very reluctant. “Look. This is a business. If you’re planning to meet someone, meet them outside.” She said before answering the ringing phone. Marlena wasn’t convinced, and this woman’s attitude was starting to get her frustrated. [Did I say starting?] “I was told to meet them here, so I’m not going anywhere.” She said angrily. The secretary was beginning to recognise her voice. “Are they an employee of Basic Black?” She asked.
“I don’t know. There a patient of mine.” She answered.
“A patient? Don’t you mean client?!!” She said, wanting this woman out.
Marlena was beyond insulted. Ok, maybe nobody ever thinks I’m a doctor. But no one has ever thought I was a *HOOKER*. And by the by, what has she come dressed as? If I didn’t know better I’d think… “Look lady, I’m supposed to meet my *patient* here and as their *doctor* I’m not leaving!” She angrily growled.
“Wait a second. I know your voice. You’re that woman who wanted to talk to John Black about some toy! Well I won’t have you in here! Security!” She yelled, as two guards ran over and took each of Marlena’s arms and attempted to drag her out of the building. “HEY! What the? Let me go! I have an appointment!” She yelled at the guards.
John had just stepped off the elevator and was finally ready to meet the doctor. He stopped right at the end of the hallway, as he saw two of his guards, dragging a woman out the door. What the? Hey! That’s the woman from the park in New York! What are they doing?
John was immediately overcome with a need to protect her, to save her, to help her. “HEY!” He angrily yelled shoving the guards away with strong arms. The guards stumbled back, and straightened up when they noticed the fuming face of their boss. “What the hell are you doing?” John angrily asked the men.
“We were instructed by Miss Roberts, to escort this woman out.” The said.
“It didn’t seem to me like you were *escorting* her out! That is no way to treat a lady! Now get out of my sight!” He angrily yelled, as they darted out of the room.
“Are you alright?” He asked the woman, tone softening with concern.
“Err, yeah.” She said, stilling coming to grips with being saved by John Black.
“I’m so sorry, what can I do for you?” He asked, feeling very guilty that his guards had done such a thing to her.
“Well I’m just waiting for my patient to arrive.” She told him.
Patient? Oh my God? “You’re…you’re my psychiatrist.” He stammered.
Marlena pieced it al together. “And…you’re my patient?!!” She replied equally astonished.
And *shit*! She was serious! Kate thought nervously.
“Oh err nice to meet you…well to see you *again* doctor.” He said, still in shock.
“Uh yeah, umm good to see you again Mr Black.” She replied.
“Hang on. How do you know my name?” He asked. They hadn’t introduced themselves last time, that’s for sure. And he’d left no details in his file.
“Well it’s a long story. Umm, shall we?” She asked.
“Oh yes please. Let me show you to my office.” He nodded showing her the way.
She walked ahead, and he couldn’t help but admire the view, given by the swing of her curves. He looked back at Kate, with a frown and look of utter disapproval.
“John..I.” Kate began.
“Save it Kate.” He said angrily, before following Marlena.
Oh *shit*. She’s *his* shrink! Why is he seeing a shrink anyway? And why does she have to be a blonde female shrink?!! And what does he mean it’s nice to see you *again*? They’ve met? I don’t like this.
John opened the door to his office, and led Marlena in.
“Again, I am *so* sorry about that, it was a huge mistake.” He said.
“Look, let’s just forget about that. I would like to keep some dignity and pride intact, and try not to remember being dragged out of here, kicking and screaming.” She smiled.
He laughed, “Don’t worry, it’s forgotten Doctor…umm?”
“Evans. Marlena Evans.” She said, offering her hand for a formal introduction.
“John Black.” He said formally introducing himself “So should we get on this then.” He asked.
“Sure. Let’s sit down then.” She said pointing to the couch.
Couch, man. Don’t sit down. He could hear Bo’s words loud and clear.
Marlena took a seat and watched as the thoughts played over in his mind. “Or you can stand up.” She said. Marlena knew what some people thought of shrinks, and clearly he was worried about spilling his thoughts out if he sat down. John felt very rude, rejecting her invitation and instantly sat down. Bo’s wrong, she doesn’t look sneaky or no good. No way! Bo + shrinks= messed up…
“So, Mr Black. Why did you call me here today?” She asked, going into shrink mode.
“Oh, call me John.” He said quickly. After that he sort of just looked around nervously trying to find words. “I…I just don’t know how to say it.” He said. “That probably sounds pathetic.”
“No, not at all. I’d be really worried if you did know exactly what to say. I’d be out of job.” She smiled.
He grinned back, “I suppose so.”
“Well could I guess?” She asked.
John doubted it. His problems weren’t the average persons problems. “Well it’s complicated, really complicated.” He said.
“I see. Well hmm. Has it got anything to do with work or family?” She asked.
Family? I don’t know my family. I can’t remember my past. “Well not directly.” He said.
Marlena thought hard, looking for possibilities. “Well I’m an amnesia specialist. Does it have anything to do with your memory?” She doubted this.
John’s face however told a different story. “Err..yeah it does.” He said quietly.
Bingo. Marlena thought. “Ok, John. How far back does this memory loss go?” She asked.
“Far back?” He asked in a confused tone.
“Yes. How far does your memory go back?” She explained.
He nodded to show his understanding, but looked around awkwardly. Not sure how to explain his answer. Marlena saw the confusion and worry. “John. Don’t worry it’s just you and me. No one else. When you’re ready.” She smiled sweetly at him. He felt much more comfortable when he looked into her eyes. When he saw her smile.
“Well…my first real memory was…umm…when I woke up in the Brady’s living room.” He told her quietly.
She looked at him now feeling confused. She had many questions now. The Brady’s? The Salem Brady’s? John saw her confusion and went on with the story.
“I was sixteen, and they said they’d found me in the water, and had pulled me out. Then they asked me what my name was…and…I…I had no idea.” He told her. “I couldn’t remember anything before that. I had no idea why I was in the water, or whether I had a family. Nothing.” He said.
Shit. Now this is real amnesia. “I’m sorry John.” She said sympathetically. John smiled his thanks. “They tried to find my family, to see if anyone was missing a teenage boy, but there was nothing. So the Brady’s decided to raise me as one of their own. Right here in Salem.” He finished.
Marlena smiled. Wow. Those Brady’s really are something. “So John. I don’t think you came here just to tell me that. So tell me. Are you here to try to remember your past?” She asked. He rubbed his forehead gently and nodded. “Yes.” Shit. Should I tell her about the other stuff? The tattoo? The fighting? The training?
“I *need* to remember doctor.” He told her.
“I’d be happy to help you John. Under one condition.” She said sternly.
“Yes?” He asked.
“You call me Marlena.” She smiled. John smiled back. He finely felt prepared to tell someone about his memories. Someone who wouldn’t judge him. John already trusted her. He just hoped she’d be able to trust him.
Marlena checked her watch. Time’s up. “Well John, it looks like we’ve just completed our first session.” She said. “So it’s up to you. Will there be another?” She asked. He nodded.
“Yeah. If you don’t mind.” He said.
“Believe me I wouldn’t venture from New York to Salem if I did mind.” She assured. Marlena passed him a new business card she’d had made, just before she came here.
It showed the address of her new office. As well as a contact number and email address. “Our next session will be in my office at Universty Hospital.” She said. He nodded. John couldn’t help but feel a flutter, knowing he had her phone number and a way to contact and see her. He’d felt really bad about the park thing before and had wanted to call and apologise.
Marlena new she had given him her number strictly for patient-doctor reasons, but new she hadn’t done this with any other patient. She was sorta hoping he’d well, call her. Even if she wouldn’t admit it to anyone, not even herself. [Pft, so how do *I* know????]
Marlena was about to make her exit, when she suddenly remembered. The toy. The grey hulk. His son’s grey hulk. “Oh John, there’s one more thing I…” she began as she checked her bag. Marlena searched through it looking for the toy. Oh what the? The freakin thing shows up everywhere, but here!
“Yes?” He asked, as watched her search her bag. “Looking for something?”
“Umm. Well do you remember our err…encounter in Central Park?” She asked. Encounter? Uh-huh…
John smiled awkwardly. “Yeah of course.” Yep, the day I was a total jerk…the day I tried to find you and apologise… “Look I’m really sorry about the way I treated you I was just…” He explained.
“John please. I understand why you’d be protective of your son. Don’t apologise. I wasn’t exactly reasonable…” She said. Yep cos’ you were wrong, wrong, wrong! You shall be eating those words in a couple of minutes… Marlena frowned at the voice in her head.
“Look, it turns out…my nephew…did take the toy.” She said.
John didn’t look angry, instead he burst out laughing. Marlena looked at him, totally confused. Ok…
“I’m sorry, but you should have seen your face! Did you think I’d run you out of town?!!” He said, as he kept laughing.
Marlena frowned again. NO…Maybe. UGH! Ok YES! She softly punched him in the ribs.
“Hey!” He laughed. “I meant to say thankyou.” He smiled. “Thankyou for bringing the toy.” He grinned.
“Well that’s the thing. I forgot it.” She smiled.
He began laughing again. This time she gave him a push. He just kept laughing.
“John…Victor..Kiri…” Kate began, but stopped when she saw John laughing happily as that woman pushed him and laughed.
John stopped, as he saw Kate. “Oh, hey Kate.”
Marlena straightened up. Marlena! What the hell was that! He’s your *patient!*
Kate gritted her teeth. “Victor just called to ask you about Brady.” She said, angrily.
“Oh, ok then.” He replied awkwardly. What the hell was that Black! She’s your doctor! She probably involved with someone…
Marlena new she had to make her exit. “Well I’ll see you on Thursday, and I’ll bring that err…thing.” She said before leaving.
“Bye.” He said sadly, watching her go. Wishing for the opposite. Kate cleared her throat to get his attention. “John! Hello! The call! Victor!” She said, not liking the scene played before her.
Marlena got in her car and sighed. He’s got a son, and probably a wife. I won’t be anyone’s mistress. And I keep my work life professional. She sighed again. And banged her head on the steering wheel. This was a*long* day…
Hmm, low fat or no fat? Meh, it all tastes like shit in the end… Marlena said to herself as she did her grocery shopping. Her family was coming to visit her on her birthday.[Which was in a couple of days.] Well her and Sam’s birthday.
Sam had insisted they come here, because she was dying to see this penthouse her sister had scored. Sam was also eager to meet Marlena’s new friends, and place the verdict on this John Black character, who Marlena always seemed to refer to in their conversations.
Trista was also very excited to see her big sis, and have a good long talk with her, like the ones they had back when she was still living in Denver. Of course Trista also wanted to eye, the men there to for her own viewing pleasure, hearing that pretty much every guy had a six pack under their shirt!
Marlena’s parents, Frank and Martha Evans, were also very eager to see their daughter. They’d always worried about their little miss independent, who had seemed to wanna achieve everything with no help at all.
Martha had a few bad vibes about Salem. [She’d heard that a lot of unusual things happen there. Fake deaths, big bad villans plotting revenge, serial killings, etc.] But she also sensed good vibes there to. Oi! It was confusing.
Plus Martha wanted to inspect the house, see what this amazing home of Marlena’s was like. Martha was also hoping to improve her daughter’s domestic skills, especially Marlena’s cooking…
Frank was still not happy about Marlena rejecting Don Craig’s proposal. He knew Don came from a very good family, and the young lawyer showed a lot of promise.
Wasn’t that enough for his daughter? I mean he never expected Marlena to lower her standards, she deserved the best…but what was wrong with Don? He was the first in a long line of boyfriends that he’d actually liked. Well in the end he was happy that he didn’t have to let his little girl go yet, he’d already let one go, he wasn’t ready for the other two to go yet.
Marlena walked up to the cashier, and unloaded her trolley. “Hi there.” The dark-haired bucktooth woman said in a southern accent.
“Hi.” Marlena replied.
“My name’s Susan, by the way. Susan Banks-Crumb.” She said happily, pointing to her nametag.
“I’m Marlena Evans.” She replied, as she watched the toy Elvis’ head bobble up and down, beside the other miscellaneous Elvis memorabilia. Which was all placed beside Susan’s cash register. I love Elvis stickers, little rock guitars, little toy Elvis’, CD covers, and more Elvis shit….
“I haven’t seen you round these parts before, just move in?” She asked.
“Yeah, few days ago.” She replied.
“Visiting your folks?” Susan asked the nice lady. Every other customer, had looked at her like she was some crazy fool.
“Nah, I’m treating a patient here. My family’s actually coming to visit me.” Marlena confirmed.
“Oh well isn’t that lovely. Your patient? Are you some kind of doctor?” She asked, intrigued.
“Yeah, psychiatrist.” She smiled.
“You don’t say. A shrink? Didn’t pick you as the type.” Susan said astonished.
“Nobody ever does…” Marlena said, knowing the sentence all to well.
“So you like Elvis huh?” Marlena asked already knowing the answer.
“Like him? I *love* him! He’s the king! Do you like him?” Susan bouncily asked.
“Err, yeah. Too bad he passed away.” Marlena offered sympathetically.
“Huh?” Susan asked, looking stunned.
Marlena saw the look and new she had to fix it. “Umm passed away…out of the…from the…top of the charts…” Marlena stammered. Not believing her own words. Well what could I do? Don’t judge me!
Susan was confused, but thought it was just heart-felt technical mumbo-jumbo from the lady doctor, so she smiled happily.
As Susan slid through the last items, she instantly stopped, as ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ played over the supermarket speakers. Susan smile widened, and she began her ‘duet’ with the king.
Marlena stood there, rather stunned, at this woman’s enthusiasm for Elvis.
Susan soon stopped her singing as she looked at Marlena. “Umm Doctor Evans?” She asked.
“Uh, yeah?” Marlena replied.
“Do you think I could make an appointment with ya. I have this sorta, problem.” She whispered.
At least she’s not in denial… “Sure, well here’s my card, and you can just call and make an appointment.” Marlena smiled, always wanting to help people, despite whatever kind of ‘problems’ they may have.
The two said their goodbyes, and Marlena picked up her grocery bags and headed for home.
“Oh my God, he was *fine*!” Hope exclaimed as she and the rest of Maggie’s party laughed as they walked into another nightclub. It was Maggie’s bachelorette party, and the women were out having a *real* good time. Drinks and dancing were on the menu. Even though the majority of the women there had boyfriends, it didn’t stop the…err…innocent flirting.
As the alcohol flowed, the women danced, laughed and let’s face it, flirted in the absence of their partners. “So your not at all fazed at the prospect of spending the rest of your life with *one* man?” Nancy asked Maggie.
“Well you know, I feel that thing…you know that thing with Mickey.” The mildly hammered Maggie replied. [Note: In my story Maggie never was an alcoholic]
“What thing?” An equally drunk Jennifer asked.
“You know, that word…umm?” Maggie said, snapping her fingers trying to guess it.
“Love?” Marlena suggested, who still didn’t think the word meant much. She held back laughs at the tipsy looks of her friends. She wasn’t quite as drunk as them, because sadly she knew she had to work tomorrow. Ugh! That was the downer….
“Ya! Dat one! Now what was da question?” Maggie asked scratching her head.
“Ok I think you’ve drunk your limit miss bride-to-be.” Kim laughed, taking the glass from Maggie.
“Yeah cos I’m not carrying you home.” Julie grinned, to the tipsy Maggie.
“So planning to hook up with anyone Mar?” Laura asked Marlena.
Marlena laughed, “I don’t think so.” She looked around the club. “Well not tonight anyway.” She winked.
“What about you, your on the single ladies list too?” Marlena asked Laura.
“Hmm, well I here there’s another party at the pub, so I’ll see what’s there.” Laura smiled playfully.
“Ok, now it’s time for the finishing touch.” Lexie announced to the ladies. “Let’s head back to the pub, so the bride-to-be can get her surprise. Well come to think of it, this is a surprise for *all* of us!” Lexie winked to the confused, yet giggly and excited women as they relocated to the Brady Pub.
“Hey come on! Ow! Yeah I think that *was* a door!” Maggie said from behind her blindfold. “Umm what was the point of blindfolding her if the lights are out?” Kim joked.
“You’re right. Hmm, I dunno, it just added to the effect.” Lexie nodded. “Because like I said, this is a surprise for everybody.” Lexie finished.
The women walked into the dark room, and stood waiting for the surprise.
“Ok, hit the lights!” Lexie called. The room sprung to life, as the disco like lights flooded the room. The Brady pub’s front bench, had been transformed into a catwalk, and the entire pub was filled with colour, lights and other decorations.
Music began to play, as Alice and Caroline, who had been planning this with Lexie, shouted. “Ok boys, showtime!” They laughed as several of Salem’s finest men came out in top hats, bare chests, bow ties and boxer shorts, walking straight onto the new catwalk.
“Oh my God!” was the universal sentence from the ladies, who wooed and whooped as the men made their way on.
Shawn, Victor and Tom, dressed in penguin suits, all with microphones. Commentated for the evening. “Ok gentlemen, do your stuff.” They shouted.
Mickey, Jack, Bo, Abe, John, Doug, Roman, Shane, Craig and two other handsome unknown men began a well co-ordinated dance, to “You Sexy Thing”.
Mickey headed it up in a sparkling purple suit, as he stood in the middle. The women couldn’t hold back their laughter as they watched, and cheered on the males, who were supposedly having a bachelor party.
The men even sang along. [Strangely they knew the words…] Putting on high-pitched voices for the female parts. [Jack showed a new-found talent, in his pitch levels ;]
“I believe in miracles, do ya, do ya, do ya, where you from? You sexy thing, you sexy thing…” They sang together, looking well rehearsed.
The women cheered with all their might as they aughed and clapped along.
Marlena couldn’t believe she was seeing John up there. Especially that *much* of John. He is gorgeous! Well more gorgeous then I thought! Who’s that guy? Marlena thought as she saw Roman.
John was glad he couldn’t see who was watching, he was pretty embarrassed, but he knew it was all for fun. After they had finished their number, they bowed and jumped off the stage laughing. The normal lights came on, and Mickey, Bo, Craig, Jack, Abe, Tom, Shawn and Shane walked to their sweethearts.
John’s glanced around the room. Well Maggie of course, Lexie, Hope, Kim, Laura, Jen, Julie, Nancy, Caroline, Alice and….
His eyes suddenly widened, his knees went weak with nervousness and his cheeks flushed bright red with utter embarrassment….
Marlena Evans
~~~~~

RUN AWAY! Was John’s first thought. Wait, maybe she hasn’t seen me… John knew there was no chance of that, she must have seen him, and knew he couldn’t runaway, that would be rude. And well, he did want to talk to her.

Maybe I slip upstairs, throw on some clothes, then come back down

Marlena however had, different plans, she had already seen John, and had no intention of letting him runaway. John watched as she began walking in his direction. He instantly diverted his eyes, refusing to make eye-contact. He knew he was bright red all over, and hoped she would make a turn, or talk to someone else, until he put more clothes on.

“Hey!” Marlena smiled at John. Taking a moment to secretly admire his tanned, muscular form.

“Uh…hi, hey, oh hey!” He stammered nervously.

She held back her giggles, knowing this *had* to be embarrassing for him. “Great act, really John, it was.” She assured him.

“Uh thanks, well we had Alice, Lexie and Caroline, co-ordinating us, plus all the input from the other guys…so yeah.” He said, feeling more comfortable, and less embarrassed. Marlena had a way of calming him, and around her. Well things seemed simpler and easier.

“So I’m guessing you were with the bachelorettes, huh? Did you party hard?” He asked, with a smile.

“Hmm, well we hit a few clubs, drank our limits. Well most of us anyway…” Marlena grinned slyly.

“Oh, I see.” He said raising an eyebrow.

At that moment, a dark-haired little boy, came rushing into the room, straight into John’s arms. “Hey Slugger!” John said, hoisting the boy in the air, with a grin.

“Hi Daddy!” Brady smiled back with a childish grin. Brady raised his left eyebrow in a gesture just like his fathers, as he glanced at what his father was wearing. Or lack there of. “Daddy, where’s da rest of your clowthes?”

Marlena laughed, watching this tiny little boy, who managed to look just like his father. Ask such an innocent question.

John laughed back at his son. “Well kid, I was sorta…umm doing a performance…yeah and well this is my costume.” He nodded.

“Why did you do a performance ‘dough? Brady asked.

“Err, well we were entertaining some girls, like this lady here.” John said pointing Marlena out to Brady.

“We saw this lady in the park in New York, do you remember?” John asked Brady.

Brady screwed up his face, in a look of concentration. And finally nodded. “Is she da lady you spent da day looking for, cos’ you wanted to say sworry?” Brady asked innocently.

John’s mouth fell upon. And Marlena’s smile widened, as she looked at John. “Really?” She smiled.

John mockingly glared back. “Ok, ok son. Let’s just introduce her. Her name is Marlena Evans, and she’s a friend of mine. She’s actually helping me out with some things.” He told Brady.

Brady smiled. “Hi, I’m Brady.” He blushed.

“Nice to see you again Brady.” Marlena said warmly. Suddenly, it hit her. Grey Hulk! Brady’s toy! “I think I have something of yours Brady.” Marlena told him.

Brady stared back, wondering what it could be.

“I think I have your Grey Hulk toy.” She smiled.

His eyes lit up. “Rweally? Cool! Can I see him?”

Oh Shit, it’s at my place. Well I can’t make him wait longer. God knows, *I’m* impatient! “Well he’s actually at my house at the moment, but we can go get him if you want?” Marlena suggested.

“Cool! Can we Dad? Plwease?” Brady begged his dad.

“Uh, well if Marlena doesn’t mind. Then sure!” He said, for so many reasons, that thought excited him.

“Yay!” Brady shouted excitedly, wanting desperately to reunite with Grey Hulk.

The three made there way out of the Brady Pub, until Marlena spoke up. “Uh John? Not that you don’t look great the way you are, but maybe you should put some extra clothes on?” She suggested. Oh my God! Did I really say that, the way I though I said it? Jesus Marlena, i dare you to make it more obvious!

John looked down at his bare chest, and short shorts and felt his face heating up again, and his face turning bright red.

“Uh, yeah.” He said nervously and embarrassingly, before taking in the entire sentence. She thinks I look good this way? John smiled at her, and felt slightly less embarrassed when he saw her equally red face.

John grabbed the first thing he saw. [A long dark coat.] And ran out the door after Marlena & Brady, not caring that this was the only item of clothing he had over his err ‘performance’ costume.

“Yep, right here.” Marlena instructed John as they pulled up to the penthouse.

John turned off the ignition, as Marlena helped an eager Brady take his seat belt off. John smiled happily at the sight. The trio walked into the building, as a slightly jealous Derek, watched on.

The sound of the elevator told them they were on the right floor. John and Brady followed Marlena’s to her door. She pulled out her keys and unlocked the door, opening the wooden door, to reveal the pleasant, elegant apartment, which held a touch of Marlena in it.

“Uh, feel free to look around guys. I’ll just go get Grey Hulk.”

“Can I go wiv you?” Brady asked Marlena.

“Sure Brady.” Marlena said taking his hand, and flashing John a quick smile, before heading upstairs with Brady.

John watched them head upstairs, and grinned widely when he heard Brady’s giggles. He explored the place with his eyes, it was beautiful and felt some-what familiar. Was I planing to buy this building a while back? He shook his head, and the feeling away. His gaze fell upon her collection of photo frames.

There was a picture of a beautiful blonde woman, with sparkling green eyes. Who looked almost exactly like Marlena, just a few years older. He guessed she was her mother. Standing next to the woman was a handsome, muscular man. With light brown hair and dazzling hazel eyes. Just like Marlena’s. He guessed this had to be Marlena’s father.

The next frame held a picture of another blonde woman. Who looked slightly younger than Marlena. John guessed it was either her sister, or maybe a friend of hers.

The next frame puzzled John. It was a picture of Marlena, and what looked like….herself?!! What the fuck? She must have a twin sister. Identical twin sister!

The frame was a picture of, well he guessed, Marlena’s twin sister and her husband and kids. After all, those kids at the park weren’t Marlena’s, she said they were her nephews. Plus Marlena had never mentioned a family, and it appeared that only one lived here.

There were another few frames. One of Marlena and a dark-haired, lanky, geeky-looking man. John raised his eyebrow, and hoped this wasn’t a boyfriend of Marlena’s.

There was another photo frame sitting face down among the others. John turned it over and stood it up in place. It held a beaming Marlena and another dark-haired man, who beamed right back at her. There was something about the way they looked at each other.

Marlena had been smiling at the man in the other photo, but not in the same way. It had been in a friendly way. But in this photo, the stares were intense and loving. And made John jealous, despite the fact that he had no professional reason to be jealous at all.

John was given no extra time to think, because Marlena and Brady had walked back downstairs. With Brady leaping over to his father, while holding his grey hul toy in his arms. “Look Daddy! Look!” Brady cheered showing his father the toy.

“Wow! Awesome! Did you thank Marlena yet Brady?” John asked.

Brady swung around and beamed at Marlena. “Thank you for taking care of Gwey Hulk for me!”

“You’re welcome Brady. I’m actually going to miss him around here, he seemed to err…follow me around a lot.” She smirked.

“Really?” Brady smiled. Inspecting the toy, for any sign of life. “I wish he’d follow me around, so I wouldn’t have to carry him everywhere.”

John and Marlena laughed at his cute, childish remark. “Would you two like something to eat or drink?” She asked them.

Brady nodded. “May I have juice pwlease?” He asked. Marlena nodded.

“John?” She asked.

“No thanks.” He replied.

Marlena went to pour Brady his juice, and soon came back with the small plastic cup. Brady thanked her and giggled at the funny straw poking out of it.

John smiled at his son. “Aah, remember the days when you could just look at a straw and laugh your heart out?”

Marlena laughed back. “Yeah, my mom told me that I laughed at a crayon once, for no particular reason, well that she knew of.”

John smiled back, enjoying his extra time with her. John wanted to get to know her more like a friend. Rather than just a doctor. Or was that more than a friend?

John’s gaze was back on the photo’s, as Marlena turned to see what he was looking at. “Oh, the photos, huh.” She smiled. “Those two are my parents. That blonde girl is my little sister, Trista. That’s me and my identical twin sister Samantha.”

“Wow! A twin! What’s that like?” He asked.

“Competitive.” She answered with a grin.

“That’s me and my friend from New York, Eugene Bradford.” Marlena continued, pointing to the cute geeky guy. John sighed slightly. She didn’t say boyfriend! Phew! “And that’s…” Marlena stopped, noticing the picture frame, which she swore she’d turned over…

John noticed the change in her tone of voice. And was about to say something, when she decided to finish off her sentence. “Well…aah that’s me and my ex-boyfriend Don Craig.” She finished. Showing sadness in her tone.

John nodded. He was happy that he was an ex-boyfriend, but the way she talked about him…well she seemed sad to say ex. They probably just broke up. And I bet she’s not looking for a relationship. And neither should you John. Izzy B. Remember Isabella?

“Umm anyway. I’ve been telling you all about me. Aah, what about you?” She asked.

“Oh.” He replied, rather startled at the turn of events. “Well let’s see I own Basic Black. I drive a silver Porsche…” He started with a sarcastic smirk.

Marlena laughed. “You know what I mean.”

“Ok. Well…I have a four and a half year old son. My family would be the Brady’s. And my other good friends in Salem. Umm and I’m single.” He added, assuming it was the right thing to say.

“Oh?.” Marlena said, not assuming such a thing. Of course, she wasn’t disappointed.

“Widowed actually.” He said with sadness.

“I’m so sorry John.” Marlena said sadly. “Brady’s mother?”

“Yeah. Isabella. That was her name. She died when Brady was a baby. Pancreatic Cancer.” He explained.

Marlena nodded her condolences. “Mommy’s an angel up there!” Brady smiled, while pointing at the ceiling. Not quite understanding the intensity of it all.

John and Marlena just smiled at him. As Brady walked into the kitchen to politely put his cup away.

The pair soon caught one another in an intense gaze. Something was pulling them together, and neither took time to doubt, or hesitate as John instinctively leaned in for the kiss. Persuading her with his eyes to do the same. John felt the slightest touch of her lips against his, for about a second, before they broke apart at the sound of voices.

“Sweetheart, we were able to catch the early-” Martha began, before silencing at the sight of her daughter, staring deep into the eyes of the man across from her, with their faces only inches apart.

A young man joined Martha inside, and his stomach instantly tied into knots at the sight of Marlena and some unknown guy…

“Don?!!” Marlena stated in shock.

“Marlena…” Don replied in a jealous tone.

John knew instantly who this guy was. He’d inspected the pictures enough to place him and the woman. The woman of course was Marlena’s mother, and the man was Don Craig.

The guy from the photo, Marlena’s ex-boyfriend. All John knew now was that he had to get out of here. He had no right to be in his doctor’s apartment. Doctor? doctor!!What are you doing John! He was feeling things he knew he shouldn’t be feeling. And all he knew right now, was one word. Run.

“Aah. I guess we should have called first…” Martha threw in as she watched the man near Marlena, and then turned to watch Don, to make sure he didn’t start anything. “Look maybe Don and I should wait outside-”

“No, no. I’d really like to meet your friend Marlena.” Don said coldly as he watched John.

Brady hugged his father’s leg, as he kept his eyes locked on the other man.

“Finally! So this must be the door. Now where’s my girl?” Frank chimed in as he carried several suitcases in. He was followed by Trista and Sam. All followed suit and silenced themselves, as they felt the tension within the room. And of course they all noticed dark-haired unknown man. “Aaah? Are we interrupting something..?” Franks said slowly.

“Look I better go. Come on Brady.” John stated, rather jealously as he picked up Brady and walked out the door.

“Joh-” Marlena started, before realising it would be safer that way. Her heart ached as she watched them go…

“So. Do you want to tell us what the hell that was?!!” Frank said, voice raised.

Marlena awoke gloomily. The night had been eventful, she’d say that. It had angered her that her father had tried to push her and Don together again. And mostly that he’d treated her like a child, and despite the fact that nothing happened between her and John.

Frank had still been rather overprotective about Marlena having ‘boys’ in her house. [Rarrghh! How crazy does that sentence sound!] In the end, Martha had settled everybody down, especially when Mikey, Aidan and Chris had arrived with their ice-cream.

Don had felt rather uncomfortable there, even though Frank had tried to persuade him to spend the night. Don had however made his own decision, and decided to spend the night over at the Salem Inn.

Marlena pulled on her rob, and walked downstairs. Everyone was up already, and the tension from last night had soon disappeared. Except for a lightly stubborn Frank, who still wanted Don here with them. “Hey, you’re up!” Trista smiled. “We thought we’d take the liberty of making you breakfast, seeing as your hosting.”

Marlena smiled as she sat down next o her dad. Who upon seeing her shook his head lightly and lifted the paper in front of his head.

“Frank!” Martha scolded. [I just had an Everybody Loves Raymond flashback ;] “Stop being so stubborn. Don made his choice. And just like your daughter, he’s an adult!” She pointed out.

Frank sighed apologetically and got up from his chair. “I’m sorry about last night sweetheart. I was just a little shocked at seeing another man here, and if you say he just forgot the rest of his clothes…I believe you!” He nodded with a slight cough. “I just thought, that maybe if you saw Don then maybe you’d…”

“I get it Dad. I’m sorry to.” She nodded. Knowing his plan. “I love you.”

He pulled her into a hug. “Aah, I love you too baby girl.” Frank said tenderly.

Marlena soon found herself wrapped up in busy conversations with her family over the breakfast table. After quite a few laughs, Marlena’s eyes widened as she looked at her watch. “Waa! I’m going to be late!” She shouted before racing upstairs.

Nobody at the table looked the least bit shocked at her behaviour. “Nope, that girl hasn’t changed.” Martha stated as she poured a glass of juice.

“No way.” Everybody agreed as they ate breakfast.

“Come on, come on…” Marlena mumbled as she shifted from side to side in the University Hospital elevator. She checked her watch again, and sighed. Gah! I am *so* late! John’s appointment was twenty minutes ago! And I have back to back patients today! I have no organisation skills!

Marlena scurried straight out of the elevator, as she quickly and as discreetly as possible, made her way to her office.

“Dr Evans—”

“I’m here, I’m here. Send him in!” Marlena rambled as she gasped for air.

“Oh. Umm Dr Evans, I was trying to call you all morning, because Mr Black cancelled his appointment for this morning.” Cameron told her. [New Secretary, minus the shrill voice of the old secretary]

“He what?!!” Marlena said, mouth flung open.

“But Mr Ryan will be here in an hour.” Cameron insisted, thinking this would make her boss feel better.

A thousand thoughts went through Marlena’s mind. But she was beyond stunned when she saw John casually walk up to the front desk, at the other side of the room.

“What the? But…” Marlena began. “He cancelled…”

“Yes…well. He cancelled his appointment with *you*. He’s switching to Dr Laura Horton you see…” Cameron said.

Before Cameron could say another word, Marlena had thrown all caution to the wind, and yanked John’s arm, forcing him to turn around. Before Marlena could let her fury go. John had taken off.

He knew he couldn’t face her. He was angry, even though he knew he shouldn’t be. He was jealous, even though he knew he shouldn’t be. The command in his head was to run. And it seemed so simple.

Marlena wasn’t giving up, and followed him. More out of concern now, rather than anger. “John! Wait!” She shouted.

When they were finally outside, Marlena jumped in front of him. Forcing him to stop and stare right into her eyes.

“John! What’s going on?!! I mean…why did you swap doctors? Why do you seem so angry? Why—”

“Look. I…” John began. John’s eyes soon widened, as he looked from side to side. Panic, crawling up his body. No…He found me…

Marlena saw this change immediately. “John?” She said softly.

He looked at her. “I’m so sorry…” John said.

Marlena felt a sting, as her vision faded into darkness, and she collapsed into John’s arms.

Ugh! My head. Aarrghh! My arm! Jesus… Marlena thought, as she slowly sat up.

Her memory of the past few hours, soon came back. And she definitely did not remember this place. What happened to me?

“Hey! You’re up!” John said happily, as he brought her a glass of water. “How’s your arm feeling?”

Marlena stared blankly at him. Her fury suddenly coming back, full force. She grabbed his shirt, bringing him very close to herself. “Where the hell am I?!!” She demanded.

John smiled at her fiestyness.

“Well, this is West Virginia of course.”

“Wes..West Virginia?” Marlena said slowly. No, no, no…backup for a second.

“What do you mean?!! Why? What happened? One minute I’m chasing you, and your not even talking to me! And now we’re out here?!!” She screamed in a frustrated voice.

“Look…I’m sorry. I…” He began.

“Why John? And what did you drug me with? What the hell is wrong with you? Who does that to a person?!!” She said shaking her head angrily, as she gave him a gentle, but sturdy push. “I mean, you were even about to switch doctors!”

“Just give me a chance to…”

“What’s going on? Are you with the mob or something? Gangs? Underworld crime?” She said, unaware of her angry babbling.

This was getting him nowhere, so he pulled her back against his chest and slid his palm across her mouth, to silence her. “Silence. Let’s try that.” John said in a deep voice. Marlena had no choice. If she tried to say something. It would just come out as a series of muffled mumbles.

“I am truly sorry about all that crap in the hospital. Look, can we just start again?” He asked.

“Les..mart..wim..letta..mmee…woe.” Marlena mumbled.

Amazingly John understood. “Oh yeah, sorry.” He said. Taking his hand off her mouth, and releasing her.

“John. There’s a lot to explain…I mean…”

“Do you trust me?” John asked her.

“What?” She asked.

“Do, you trust me? He asked again.

“I..well…”

“Yes or no.”

“Well yeah..but…”

“When you came to my office and said you wanted to help me, did you mean it?” John asked seriously.

“Yes John. Of course I meant it, but why…”

“Then I can trust you?”

“John, I am…I was you doctor…so of course…but WHY are you asking me?”

“I just wanted to make sure.” He smiled. “Umm, would you like something to eat, drink?…Umm I have…water.” He said peering into the tiny, understocked fridge. “I didn’t really have time to get anything…but don’t worry I’m sure we won’t starve.” John laughed nervously.

Marlena simply stared at him, as she tried to arrange her thoughts and analyse the situation. Come on Marlena, stay calm, the man’s got to have a very good reason to have brought me here…

“John. Could you please tell me…WHY THE HELL WE ARE HERE ALREADY?!??” She screamed angrily, unable to contain her rage.

“Aah..aah..ok, ok!” He said quickly, motioning for her to calm down. “Long version, or short version?”

Her stare darkened. “Look I’ll just pick up where we left off, after our session. An tell you everything else later.” He said nervously through his lame chuckle. “So you trust me, right? He asked again.

Marlena’s gaze softened and she took his hand and sat him down. “Of course. Now this is about your past isn’t it?”

“Yeah. There’s so much to say…so much that I’m afraid to say.” He told her.

“Well…I’m not going anywhere.” She smiled. “And John, I’ve never judged anyone by their past, and I don’t plan to start with you.”

He trusted her and she trusted him. That was all that mattered. “Ok, do you remember how I told you, that the Brady’s raised me, after they’d found me out at sea?”

“Yes.”

“Well…when I was eighteen, I decided to go out into the real world, in a sense, because you see, from the moment I arrived in Salem, to the moment I left…everyone had just treated me so…nice.” He said.

“Nice? What’s wrong with that?” A puzzled Marlena asked.

“Well everyone had acted like I was ticking time bomb about to off, and they acted like they couldn’t upset me. I mean if I fought with Bo or Roman as a kid they’d just yell at both of them to leave me alone, even if I’d been the one who started the fight. All our friends in Salem were so cautious around me, and as I walked away I swear I’d catch a flicker of panic go from their eyes, and I had no idea why. I guessed that maybe it had something to do with a tattoo I had on my back.” He said.

“A tattoo?”

“Yeah. I saw it one day, and asked Shawn and Caroline about it. They’d said they’d seen it, and told me not to worry about it. That’s all they would say.” John nodded, focusing on the floorboards.

“But I needed answers. Answers too so many questions. How I got there?, where I came from?, why I was there?, why I was treated this way? I had to get out of there. Run. Run was all my head new. I’d run before and I’d run again, I remembered that.

So I left, I worked casual jobs here and there, and travelled all over. I felt so free, and that was new to me.” He smiled, through glossy eyes.

“Then, all over again. My world went blank. The Brady’s had been keeping contact with me to make sure I was safe, but then they’d lost all contact with me. They couldn’t find me. They’d called a search party, and had the FBI all over my case, trying to find me. After four months, all hope was lost, and I was presumed dead.”

“Oh my God…John.” She said stroking his arm.

He nodded. “It of course wasn’t true, and I’d been ‘dead’ for six years.” He shook his head in disbelief. “Six years? I still can’t believe it.” He sighed. “And amazingly after those six long years of being dead, I was found out at sea, once again by Shawn Brady.” He smiled, recalling the look on Shawn’s face when he’s looked into the eyes of his long lost son. “I didn’t remember anything from those six years, and eventually I had my life back again.” He nodded.

Marlena blinked back tears and pulled him into a hug. John allowed himself to be swept into the embrace, and gently lay his head across hers, as he smelt her hair.

Marlena still had many questions, but knew she’d get her answers later, and the rest of the story too. She had to give him time, right now she’d just keep her temper under-control.

“So…” She said.

“Mmm?” He queried.

“What’s for dinner?” Marlena grinned, as she heard her stomach growl.

“I have pastrami, eggs, cheese, rye, tomato, milk and some bread I picked up on our way here. So we can make some sandwiches or something, is that ok?” He asked.

“Yep.”

He smiled. Should I be worried? She hasn’t asked me another single question about before. She doesn’t even know why I brought her here, and she’s acting cool with it. Hmm, what is she up too?

“John? John? Hey John!” Marlena said, waving her hand in front of John.

“Wh-what?” He asked, puzzled.

“You kinda tuned out, you’ve poured milk all over your bread.” She smiled.

“Oh? Uh yeah, whoops.” He said, with a hint of a smile, as he threw the bread out.

As he went back to grab another slice, he found himself going back into thought. “John, I don’t have some escape plan.”

“What?!! He said in a surprised voice. How the hell did she know that??!! Jesus!

“I..i didn’t think–”

“Come on John. You’ve been watching me this whole time. It’s as if you think I’m going to clobber you over the head and then do a runner. I said I was going to help you.” She said firmly.

“Oh I’m sorry, I’m just not used to all this—“ he said. It was a lame cover up. Well at least she hadn’t figured out that the real reason he’d been watching her. God. That could’ve been embarrassing. But could the situation be more of a fairytale? He was stranded alone with a beautiful woman. The stars would sparkle, the moon would shine, it was an incredibly romantic place, and the seclusion added to the serenity. Gah! What am I doing?!! This isn’t a fairytale, this isn’t even a safe place! The sooner I get her back in Salem and away from all this the better…

“John…”

“Oh…yeah?”

“You’re doing it again.” She said pointing to the milk-soaked bread.

“Oh for the love of—” He said, running his hands through his hair in frustration.

“Look why don’t I make something?” Marlena suggested.

“Go for it.” He nodded.

Shit. Ok, ok. Sandwiches. Any human being can make sandwiches…well ish…uhh yeah. I’m sure I can cook something much more appetizing, like umm…

Marlena searched the cupboards and fridge. “Aah ok then!” She said triumphantly.

“What?” He asked with a smile, he was loving her enthusiasm.

“Well you have the ingredients for pancakes—” I think… “So how bout’ those for dinner?” She asked him.

“Sure, sounds great. Can I help?” He asked.

“Uhh, no. No. I’m good.” She smiled with a nervous twitch.

“Alright. Well I’ll let the chef get to it! I’ll go chop us some firewood.” He said before exiting.

Chef? Dude if only you new…well let’s get to it…

“Ok flour…umm…a bit of that I guess.” She said pouring in her version of ‘a bit’.

“Umm, I know milk goes in here somewhere…I’ll just pour some of that in. Uh, baking powder right? Wait, who am I talking too??!! Gah! Ok, well add some butter, little more. Is it supposed to look that yellow? Meh. Sugar too. Let’s see, what else? Oh oh! An egg! Or is it two? Well just one I guess.” Marlena cracked her egg pretty unsuccessfully, leaving a muck of yoke, whites and shell in a cup. She attempted to fish most of the shell out, not noticing the bits she missed. [Poor girl…]

“There. Ok mix it up, with a…hmm where’s the wooden spoon?” Marlena asked. [It’s a soap, of course she’s thinking out loud…] “Ok, don’t panic…there’s a big salad fork…and it’s wooden, and it’s about the same size, so it should work…ish.” She concluded as she grabbed the fork and began mixing the ingredients with it.

There was a muck of ‘batter’ type stuff, all around the kitchen, but Marlena’s main focus was on cooking the pancakes. Hmm, maybe I did inherit some of moms cooking talent? She stared at the mess she’d made…Yeah, no. Big no.

Now, remember the first pancake’s always bad…and like the second…and sometimes the third, but I am sure the ninth will totally kick ass…

Marlena thought as she cooked up a storm.

John was outside chopping wood. He sighed tiredly, but was hopeful, when he thought of the dinner he’d get. And the company at his table. It was feeling more despite the fact that the hostage wasn’t fully aware that they were a hostage.

John looked through the window, and smiled at the sight of a dancing Marlena. She was listening to her ipod dancing around the kitchen happily. Unaware of everything around her….maybe even the food…

He smiled, she even seemed more comfortable, she had taken off her jacket which she had clung to this whole time, and was now in a stylish brown singlet top with her camo’s.

He shook his head, knowing he shouldn’t be thinking about her this much, and continued chopping the wood with a grin.

“We’ve got sugar, marmalade and cheap imitation maple syrup crap. Take your pick.” Marlena smiled to the now showered and dressed John who sat at the table ready to eat the very yellow pancakes.

“I’d have to go with the cheap imitation maple syrup crap thanks.” He smiled. I wonder why they’re this yellow? Probably some special family recipe or something.

He poured on the syrup. “May I?” He asked like a gentleman.

“Please.” She smiled back.

He took a bite chewed happily, well that is until the taste hit his taste buds. His smile turned into a look of sourness as he screwed up his face, and blinked several times. Is it supposed to be this crunchy??

“What’s wrong?” She asked.

“Nuffin” He replied quickly, with the pancake still in his mouth. Arrrghh! What am I eating?!!

“John your face looks…uhh” Marlena began, as she stared at John’s screwed up face. “Are you ok? Is it the pancakes?” She said sadly.

He felt terrible, when he heard the sadness in her voice. “No, no. I’m just trying to absorb and concentrate on the taste. I really like them though!” He lied, with a smile.

“Oh?! Well I have to confess I’ve never been much of a cook. That was my mom and Sam’s forte.” She informed him

“Ah I see.” He nodded. He didn’t want to lie again…the girl was REALLY bad at cooking!

“So are we going to share or what?” She asked.

“What? Uh no. You cooked em’ for me, so they’re mine.” He said, as he tried to stuff them in his mouth, he turned away from her for a moment to cringe and swallow, then turned back and smiled.

“How bout’ I cook next. You up for a sandwich?” He asked.

“Sure.” She replied, suspicious of his motive for gobbling up those pancakes. “Then, we’re going to play a game. Ladies choice of course.” She grinned rather cheekily.
