(Spike and Angel are chilling outside of the school checking out the girls and Spike is leaning up against the wall when John comes running up in his hot black leather jacket)
John: Hey dude, what’s up? Any new girls around?
(Put’s his hands into his jacket pockets)
Spike: Yea! Check her out.
(He points to a blonde chick)
John: OOO. She’s a fine piece of work.
Angel: Hmmm mmmm
John: What’s her name?
Spike: I don’t know
John: Go ask her. Maybe you can…you know…hook up.
(nudges Spike with his elbow while his hand is still in his jacket pocket)
Spike: What the bloody hell are you talking about? Your more capable of getting her than i am.
John: Nah! I’ve got my eyes on someone else.
(Stares off toward the other end of the school yard as he leans up against the wall next to spike)
Angel: John, my man…your not still hooked on Marlena are you?
Spike: Oh yea. (steps away from the wall and looks at Angel) That’s right. (slaps Angel on the arm and Angel gives him a dirty look) He’s been wanting her since the bloody ninth grade.
Angel: Yea. Hey don’t you remember that incident in tenth grade you nearly pushed her down the steps.
John: That was an accident. At least she didn’t fall. (he stops staring off and pulls away from the wall taking his hands out of his pockets and using them as he talks) You guys don’t understand do you? She’s beautiful, sweet, caring, smart, affectionate, and she wants to be a doctor. That’s the kind of woman i want.
(he points to himself with both hands)
Spike: Oh bloody hell you’ll never get her. Just look. (He grabs a hold of John’s arm and pulls him to look at Marlena who is walking with hope and smiling) Just look. The way she walks and the way she dresses. (He looks at John while John stares straight ahead) That’s called class buddy…something you ain’t got. (looks back at Marlena) Look at her hair, her make up…
(John cuts him off when he whips around knocking Spike’s hand from his arm)
John: Her smile…her laugh…(He turns back to look at her and leans against another wall) She’s beautiful.
(Spike rolls his eyes along with Angel as Angel laughs a little)
Spike: Yes she’s beautiful, yes she has class but you dont. she doesn’t want to be with you. John your like the most popular guy in this school…(John turns aroudn to look at him) If she hasn’t noticed you by now…she probably never will. (Silence and JOhn looks down at the ground Spike continues by walking over to Angel and tapping him on the back) And like Angel said…you nearly pushed her down the bloody stairs.
(John steps away from the wall)
John: It was an accident. she has to have forgiven me by now.
(The bell rings and none of the boys hear it as they stare at one another trying to think of what they should do. Suddenly Angel sees everyone going inside)
Angel: Ah guys…were going to be late.
(Both Spike and JOhn look over to where Angel is looking)
John: Oh sh*t!
(the three boys start running for the school and on their way they run past the blonde chick and spike stops)
Spike: oooo hey honey.
Buffy: Pig!
Spike: Ew someone’s rude.
(Angel comes back outside and grabs Spike by the arm)
Angel: Spike knock it off and come on.
(PUlls him into the school and they run for their classes)
(HOpe and Marlena are walking up the stairwell on their way to class)
HOpe: So…this is it. WEre back at Salem High. Our lawst year we better make it the best.
Marlena: Don’t we always?
Hope: No!
(Marlena stops in the middle of the hallways and Hope stops with her)
Marlena: No? HOpe! WE get straight a’s every…
(Hope cuts her off)
HOpe: no, no, no. I’m talking about you…(Looks down the hallways) and him.
(She points down the hallway and marlena turns her head to look and almost stumbles over her own feet)
Marlena: Oh! oh my gosh it’s John. Oh. He looks so good this year.
(She looks back at HOpe smiling, HOpe puts a silly expression on her face)
HOpe: Better than last year??
Marlena: Look HOpe. He may be cute (looks back at him) with his gorgeous hair and his dark blue eyes and his…and his black leather jacket but (looks back at hope)
he still tried pushing me down the stairs. (Start to walk to their class) What does that tell you about him? It tells me that he’s not sweet, kind and romantic like the kind of man i want. I want someone i can spend the rest of my life with.
(Hope stops once again and grabs Marlena’s arm, marlena looks at her)
Hope: Mar…he didn’t mean to push you
Marlena: Yes he did.
Hope: Look i know you want all those things but maybe deep down inside of John he is all of those things. He’s just afraid to open up.
(Marlena pulls away from Hope and flings her arms out wildly at her sides)
Marlena: Hope! Hope no! (she stops and then stares at HOpe seriously) This year I’m going to find the perfect guy…and it won’t be John Black.
(hope watches as Marlena turns her back to her and heads for her class and after a few seconds of silence she follows after her)
(John, Angel, and Spike are all sitting in class laughing and HOpe and Marlena come in spike looks up)
Spike: Hey John look. YOur woman’s here.
(John looks up)
John: Oh my god. Look at her she’s beautiful. Her golden hair, her hazel eyes, her beautiful smile.
(angel starts to laugh and then nudges Spike so that he will look at him and then he points down to Johns desk)
Angel: And your drool on the desk.
(John snaps out of it and looks down at the desk and then he hears angel and spike laughing and turns to them)
John: alright alright. Make fun now but when were going to prom together it will be a different story.
Spike: yea sure.
Bo: Hey dude what’s up?
John: Hey Bo how’s it going?
Bo: Fine fine.
Hope: Bo!
Bo: oh, gotta go…my woman calls.
(Bo goes over to the other side of the room with hope while John starts to stare off into space at marlena. Spike and angel watch bo for a few seconds and then they turn and see john. their smiles fade as they stare at him and then spike taps him)
Spike: Hey yo snap out of it.
(John stops staring and looks at spike)
John: Huh?
(Spike starts to laugh along with Angel as he sits back in his seat)
Spike: Yo man your tottaly hooked…(points toward marlena) on marlena.
(John smiles as he starts to turn the right way in his seat)
John: totally.
(A few mintutes pass in the class and john doesn’t realize that he has been staring at marlena forever)
Teacher: Mr Black? Mr Black?
(suddenly the teachers voice breaks him out of his thoughts and he jumps up)
John: Huh? What?
Teacher: Can you please tell me what the fifth comandment is?
John: Mar…i mean Evans…i mean…ahhhh….i don’t know
(He waves his hand at the teacher and then puts his elbow on his desk and rests his head on his hand)
TEacher: Pay attention Mr. Black.
John: Yes sir. (Spike and angel are laughing and john turns around) Hey why didn’t you guys tell me.
(spike tries to stop laughing as he raises his hands up to his sides and shrugs his shoulders)
Spike: Sorry.
(They continue to laugh as John turns back around in his seat)
(Across the room HOpe stops looking over at JOhn and taps Marlena on the arm)
Hope: Hey mar?(marlena turns around) John was just checkin you out.
Marlena: NO he wasn’t.
HOpe: Yes he was. (Marlena turns around in her seat and starts doodling something on her notebook hope watches) didn’t you hear him…or wern’t you paying attention?
(Marlena continues to doodle as she rests her chin in her hand and doesn’t even look up while she talks)
Marlena: I guess i wasn’t.
Hope: What? That’s not like you. You always pay attention.
Marlena: Yea i just have other things on my mind.
(HOpe stares over Marlena’s shoulder trying to make out what she is doodling)
Hope: LIke what?
Marlena: Like Roman Brady.
(HOpe stops trying to read the notebook and looks at marlena shocked)
HOpe: Roman Brady!!!!
(Everyone turns to look at hope and both her and marlena sit in embarrasment)
Teacher: Ms. Williams is there a problem?
HOpe: No. (The teacher goes back to teaching and hope continues to try to read what marlena is writing) What about roman?
(Marlena still doesn’t look up from her doodling and when she moves her arm hope finally sees what she is writing and smiles)
Marlena: I don’t know. I think i might have feelings for him again.
Hope: Mar. YOur lying to me.
(marlena looks up from what she is doing and looks at hope)
Marlena: What?
Hope: you just wrote John’s name on your notebook…(Marlena looks down at her notebook) Twice!
(Marlena can not believe her eyes as she stares down at John’s name scribbled on her notebook two times)
John: What do u suppose they’re talking about?
Spike: i don’t know. Hope just said Roman’s name.
John: yea i know that.
Angel: hey dude get off it your never gonna get her
John: yes i am or i’m gonna die tryin
Angel: are you crazy? no girl is worth that much.
John: She is. Look, i went to that chick…Celeste. you know the one that sees visions. she told me that it’s fate that me and marlena be together. she saw us together…in the future.
Spike: oh bloody hell what does Celeste know?
John: a lot more then you. you’ll see.
HOpe: you do like him don’t you mar?
(marlena is nervous)
Marlena: no! I didn’t write that.
HOpe: i just sat here and watched you.
Marlena: oh my gosh. maybe your right. oh hope. i can’t like him. i can’t. not after what he did.
Hope: oh come on. that was two years ago. you need to put it behind you.
Marlena: no. i can’t like him. i have to keep my mind focused on school and becoming a doctor. i can’t like him.
Hope: well you better go to a different school beause your hooked on him (Hope looks across the room) and from the looks of it… (she looks back at marlena) he’s hooked on you too
(marlena slowly brings her head up to look across the room and when she does she sees john staring at her. john notices that she sees him and quickly turns his head away and then so does marlena)
(after class out in the hallway)
Angel: man..i can’t believe she caught you staring at her.
Spike: yea im surprised she didn’t say anything
John: me too.
Angel: do you think she knew you were looking at her or did you look away before she saw you.
John: im not sure.
Spike: hey dude what class do u have next?
John: chemistry why?
(spike is staring down the hallway)
Spike: guess who else does too?
(john turns his head to look the same way that spike is lookign and then sees marlena walkikng toward his cemestry class)
John: oh my god
Angel: unbelievable. What are you gonna do man? are you going to get a seat next to her?
John: im gonna try
Angel: u better hurry.
John: oh man. i’ll catch you guys later.
(john runs toward the classroom)
Spike: so whaddaya think?
Angel: he’s toast.
Spike: definetely
Marlena: alright i guess i’ll see you later this is my class. i hope i can find a lab partner.
(hope sees john walking toward the class and smiles)
Hope: i think you will.
(marlena follows hopes gaze)
Marlena: oh my gosh. theres no way he’s in my chemistry class.
Hope: um…i think he is.
Marlena: oh no what am i going to do?
Hope: talk to him.
(hope kisses her on teh cheek and then runs for her class marlena watches her)
Marlena: no! oh man.
(marlena sees that john is approaching and heads into the classroom hoping to find a good lab partener)
Sarah: hey Marlena over here.
Marlena: hi Sarah. how are you?
Sarah: fine i have a surprise for you
Marlena: what is it?
(Sarah steps to the side exposing roman behind her)
Sarah: Roman Brady
(marlena is shocked to see him as he smiles at her)
Roman: hello Marlena
Marlena: Roman hi. it’s been a while
Roman: i know
Marlena: how have u been?
Roman: oh fine fine. still getting over you
(marlena looks away)
Marlena: Roman please (she looks back at him) let’s not do this
Roman: alright i won’t go back down that road again
Marlena: alright
Roman: if you can honestly tell me you don’t have feelings for me anymore
Marlena: i dont. god Roman! we broke up in ninth grade. i don’t have feeligns for you anymore
Roman: yes you do. your lying to me…or else you would be looking me in the eyes.
(marlena stops staring at the counter and looks roman directly in the eyes)
Marlena: i don’t have feelings for you anymore
Roman: alright then i guess i’ll leave you alone. im sorry sarah but i don’t want her sitting with us
Sarah: Roman…
(marlena cuts her off)
Marlena: no…no. that’s fine…i’ll sit somewhere else.
(marlena starts to search the room for another seat)
Teacher: Marlena will u please find a seat?
Marlena: um…yes.
Teacher: right there will be fine.
(he points to a seat right next to her and she turns her head to look where he is pointing and then she sees john sitting in teh seat next to it and then points to it while looking at the teacher)
Marlena: right here? isn’t there anywhere else?
Teacher: no sorry. all other seats are taken please sit down.
(marlena hesitates a moment and then sits down unaware that john is staring at her)
Teacher: now class remember whoever your sitting with will be your lab partner for the year. there will be no trading. now please sit quietly while i explain the class.
(marlena is sitting at the table quietly listening to what th eteacher says when suddenly she hears a voice next to her that makes her jump)
John: hi my name’s
(marlena cuts him off)
Marlena: i know who you are
(she answers without looking at him and john is surprised and smiles)
John: you do?
Marlena: yes i do. you almost pushed me down the steps in teh tenth grade.
John: that was two years ago.
Marlena: yes and i still remember. (John tries to touch her shoulder but before he can marlena turns around and looks at him angerly) listen…we may be lab partners but that doesn’t mean that we have to talk to each other. you doln’t talk to me and i won’t talk to you understood.
John: yep.
Marlena: yes
(john stares at her wondering why she is saying yes and then realizes that she is correcting him)
John: yes.
(marlena is then satisfied and turns back to face the front while john continues to stare at her and smiles)
Teacher: alright today is our first assignment. you must work together to come up with a solution to the problem on teh board. first one done gets an a. alright get to work.
(marlena starts working by herself and john watches her and smiles)
John: so…what do you think this means?
(marlena continues to work and doesn’t look up)
Marlena: look im not going to pretend to like you so please don’t pretend to like me. i will figure this out. all you have to do is sit there and pretend your working.
John: but were supposed to work together.
Marlena: well im not workign with you besides im already done.
(looks up at the teacher)
Marlena: Mr. Thompson im finished.
(john stares at marlena smiling and then whispers)
John: d**n. your so smart.
(marlena turns to him)
Marlena: Excuse me?
John: i said your so smart.
Marlena: thank you.
(john gets really close to marlena and she feels like she can’t breathe)
John: and i don’t PRETEND to like you.
(it is silent and before marlena can say anything else the bell rings)
Teacher: alright class we will be starting for real tomorrow.
(marlena gathers up her stuff and walks quickly out of the room and past hope who follows her to her locker)
Hope: hey Mar. what happened? did you talk to him?
Marlena: unfortuantely.
Hope: oh my god. what did you say? what happened?
Marlena: well it turns out that Roman has that class too
Hope: Roman? oh no.
Marlena: yea. he asked if i had feelings for him anymore. i told him no therefore he didn’t want me to sit with him so guess who i wound up sitting next to?
Hope: who?
Marlena: John!
Hope: John!
Marlena: that’s right. we also have to be lab partners for the rest of the year.
Hope: oh my gosh. so what did he say?
Marlena: i ‘d rather not talk about it ok. can we just go to english?
Hope: of course.
( they head off to english)
(Spike and Angel meet John out in the hallway)
Spike: Hey dude. So…what happened? Did you sit next to her?
John: yep. as a matter of fact were lab partners.
Angel: what?!
Spike: Woa, how’d you manage that one? i thought she hated you.
John: well it wasn’t really optional…(john tries to avoid eyecontact and then looks at hit buddies) it was the only seat left.
(spike and angel start laughing)
Spike: Oh! so your saying she didn’t even want to sit with you?
John: Nope. She doesn’t want to have anything to do with me.
Spike: Oh!
Angel: I told you.
Spike: You got burned dude!!
John: Arlright don’t rub it in let’s just get to class.
(Puts his arm around spike’s shoulder friendly as they walk to english)
HOpe: Hey Mar? You ok? YOu seem awfully distand all of a sudden.
Marlena: No i’m fine. Hey HOpe…when someone says that they don’t pretend to like you…(she turns around to face Hope) What does that mean?
HOpe: WEll i guess that it would mean that they are not pretending to like you and that they really do like you.
Marlena: Are you sure?
HOpe: Yea. What’s wrong with you?
(Marlena shakes her head and then turns back around to face the front)
(Spike jumps into the room)
Spike: Spike… (he puts his arms and hands way up above his head and smiles and yells) IS IN THE HOUSE!!!!
(John and Angel come in behind him and JOhn has his hands in his jacklet pockets he then takes one out and puts it on spike’s shouler)
John: Hey dude. Knock it off. Your a senior act it.
(John walks past him and rests his butt on the teachers desk)
Spike: Well excuse me if i want to have fun.
John: Well you go ahead and get detention then.
(john continues to watch spike as he flirst with some girl and he doesn’t realize that marlena is staring at him. angel sees her and taps John on the shoulder)
Angel: Hey John look.
(John looks away from Spike and looks where Angel is looking and sees marlena quickly looik away. John smiles and then turns to face angel)
John: Was she just looking at me?
Angel: I don’t know
(Spike is finished flirting and walks up behind john and angel and puts his arms on both of their shoulers so that he is in between them they both look at spike)
Spike: Quit bullsh*ttin and sit down dudes.
(Spike lets go of their shoulders and slides between them making his way to his seat with them following afte rhim. John stares at marlena as he walks to his seat and then sits down next to marlena and marlena is staring straight ahead into space hope looks over at john and then quickly looks at marlena and taps her on the shoulder)
HOpe: Mar…mar…Marlena
Marlena: Huh
HOpe: What is with you?
Marlena: Nothing. noth…nothing.
Hope: Hey did something else happen last period that your not telloing me?
Marlena: NOpe.
(John grabs marlena’s hand as she is rummaging through her stuff nervojusly and she jumps)
John: Hey. You just corrected me last period for saying yep…you just said nope.
(marlena stares at him and almost gets lost in his eyes but then pulls her hand away from his and continues on with her things)
Marlena: Leave me alone…please.
John: fine. (John stares at her for a few seconds and then whispers) your beautiful.
(Marlena stops once again and looks over at John)
Marlena: What did you say?
John: Wouldn’t you like to know?
(HOpe watches John as he turns back to himself in his seat and then she looks at marlena who seems nervous)
HOpe: Hey you ok?
Marlena: yeah. He just caught me off guard that’s all.
(She starts fiddling with her things again and hope notices)
HOpe: Mar your nervous. what’s wrong?
Marlena: Im fine.
(The boys are watching from their seats and John crosses his arms across his chest, lays back in his seat and then looks at spike smiling.)
John: She wants me.
(Spike chuckles)
Spike: Yea right.
(Bell rings and they leave english)
Hope: Well i’ll see you tomorrow. Call me later
Marlena: Ok.
Bo: Bye Marlena.
Marlena: Bye Bo.
(Marlena wakls to her locker and she is looking down trying to find her key and when she does she looks back up and sees john and jumps)
John: hey! Sorry i didn’t mean to startle you.
Marlena: No it’s ok. Can i help yiou?
(She gets her locker open and starts putting things in and taking things out and john leans on the locker next to her)
John: I just wanted to ask you if you were ok. You seemed awfully upset earlier.
Marlena: No i’m fine.
John: ARe you sure?
(Marlena is looking down at her things and doesn’t look up while she is takling)
Marlena: Yep.
(John speaks sweetly)
John: Yes.
(Marlena looks up at him and is almost speechless)
Marlena: Yes.
(John stares at her for a few secons making her uncomfortably and then she snaps out of it and looks up shutting her locker door while john pulls himself away from the other locker)
Marlena: ah…i better be going.
John: alrighjt. See you tomorrow in chemistry.
Marlena: Yea see ya.
(John watched marlena as she disappeared outside and then he smiled turnign back to his buddies as the neared him in the hallway)
Spike: So…what happened?
John: Nothing.
(spike stares at him and then he gets a wide grin on his face)
Spike: oooooooo he got burned again!
John: Hey listen here. Nobody got burned. I like her…a lot and im going to do everything that i possibloy can to get her.
(Marlena gets home)
Marlena: Mom…mom…mom im home. Hello..(walks into the kitchen and sees her mom lying dead on the floor, she drops her books and brings her hands to her mouth and starts to cry.) Oh my god! Mom! mom!!
(A few hours later)
Officer: So was she dead when you came home?
Marlena: Yes
Officer: Is that all you saw?
Marlena: yes.
Officer: Im sorry you had to see it. Your mother wasn’t killed. She killed herself.
(marlena can’t believe what she is hearing.)
Marlena: No! No! that’s impossible. she couldn’t have. NO!
Officer: It’s ok. Why don’t you call up a friend and stay with them?
(the officers leave and marlena calls hope)
HOpe: Hello
Marlena: Hope…it’s…it’s Marlena
HOpe: Marlena what’s wrong?
Marlena: My mom…she…she…oh god! My mom kiled herself!
Hope: what?
Marlena: CAn i please come stay with you?
Hope: Of course.
Marlena: Thank you.
(JOhn, Spike, and Angel are all hanging out at JOhn’s place and the news comes on and John watches in shock as they show Marlena coming out of the house and walking toward a cab and her mother being wheeled out)
JOhn: Oh my god guys look. It’s Marlena’s mother she…she…killed herself. THat’s horrible.
Reporter: Daughter of Martha Evans, Marlena Evans was completely devastated. She has been sent to stay with a friend.
JOhn: Marlena…oh god. She must be hurting so bad.
Spike: Dude…let it go. She’s not going to accept comfort from you.
John: I know. I just feel so bad.
(The next day at school HOpe and Marlena come walking in and Marlena looks so upset and is staring at the floor and tehn Hope grabs her arm and stops her. Marlena looks up)
HOpe: Hey you sure you can get through school today?
Marlena: Yes. Just..just leave me alone.
(PUlls her arm from Hope’s grasp and runs down the hallway)
HOpe: Mar!
(Spike, Angel, and John are all sitting in their seats and then they see Marlena come walking in sadly)
Spike: Look, there’s your girl. You gonna drool again?
John: Hey know it off. Look at how sad she is.
Angel: Dude…lay off.
Teacher: Alright class as we all know Marlena’s mother died yesterday so i would like us all to take a few minutes and pray for her.
(Everyone bows their heads except Marlena and while JOhn’s head is bowed he watches Marlena as she tries not to cry and then gets up quickly running out of the room)
HOpe: Marlena!
Teacher: NO let her go. She needs to be alone right now.
JOhn: Ummm…excuse me but may i please use the restroom?
Teacher: Yes you may Mr. Black.
(John gets out into the hallway and then looks both ways)
John: Where the hell did she go? (Then when he looks toward the window he sees her outside on the ledge and runs out the doors. She looks over at him as he reaches his hand out to her) No. Don’t.
Marlena: Don’t…touch me.
John: Then please…step down. What are you trying to do? Kill yourself?
Marlena: Yes.
JOhn: Why?
Marlena: Don’t ask me why. YOu watch the news.
JOhn: Listen. Killing yourself is not going to bring her back.
Marlena: I know that. Killing myself won’t bring back my father who killed himself and my god d**n…
John: Woa.
Marlena: Brother who died when he was born.
John: I’m sorry i had not idea.
Marlena: What do i have left to live for? Just tell me that.
John: Me. YOu have me to live for.
Marlena: What? No, no.
JOhn: Please…step down.
(REaches his hand out to her again)
Marlena: Don’t…touch me.
John: Please!
Marlena: Your nothing to me. Do you understand me? NOthing!
John: Ok that’s it.
(Drake puts one foot up on the ledge and keeps the other one on the regular sidewalk and grabs her waist as she kicks and struggles to free herself from him.)
Marlena: Put me down!
(JOhn puts her down on the sidewalk and she steps away from him pressing out the wrinkles that he made in her clothing)
JOhn: Listen. I may not be anything to you…but d**n it Marlena Evans your everything to me.
(Marlena stops what she is doing and stares at JOhn in shock)
Marlena: What?
John: You heard me. NOw please…let me be here for you.
Marlena: John you don’t even know me. God! What is it with you boys? You don’t even know a girl and you want to be everything to them.
(Marlena starts to walk away from him and he follows behind her while he takls to her)
JOhn: I know you well enough to know your smart. I know you wanna be a doctor.
(Marlena stops and turns around placing her hand on the bar next to her and she stares at him curiously)
Marlena: What kind of doctor?
John: A phyciatrist.
(Marlena gets a knotting feeling in her stomach and she lets go of the bar so that she can place hyer hand on her stomach)
Marlena: H…how…how do you know that?
John: I have my sources.
Marlena: Yeah well you don’t know the hell i’ve been put through so don’t pretend to understand.
(Marlena takes her hand from her stomach and turns and starts to walk away again and JOhn follows after her and then he grabs her arm and pulls her around gently to face him)
John: LIke i said before…Im not pretending. You know your really surprising me now.
Marlena: Oh yeah? (Marlena pulls her arm hard from JOhn’s grip and stares at him angerly) And why is that?
John: I mean those horrible ugly words coming out of your beautiful cute little mouth. Do you always swear like that?
(Marlena looks down ashamed of herself)
Marlena: No. Im just relaly upset right now.
(John walks up to her and grabs her shoulders causing her to look up)
JOhn: Well let me help you. Let me be here for you.
(Marlena is silent as she stares into his big beautiful gorgeous blue eyes and then she starts to cry)
Marlena: No i can’t do that.
(She tears herself from JOhn’s grasp and runs toward the class)
John: Marlena!
Teacher: Welcome back Marlena. Everything ok?
Marlena: It’s fine.
Teacher: Should we be expecting Mr. Black anytime soon?
Marlena: I don’t know.
(John comes walking in slowly staring at Marlena with his hands in his leather jacket pockets)
TEacher: Ah…John. WElcome back.
John: Yeah.
HOpe: Hey Mar, what happened?
Marlena: I really dont’ want to talk about it.
(John sits down and is staring at Marlena and Spike and Angel lean up in their seats so that they can talk to him)
Spike: Hey dude what’s going on?
John: Nothing.
Angel: Why you staring at her like that?
JOhn: Because i just saved her life.
Spike: You what?
Angel: Dude, what ‘s going on?
John: I’ll tell you about it later.
(Later on that day Marlena goes to her chemistry class and she sees Roman)
Roman: Hi Marlena.
Marlena: Hello Roman.
Roman: I heard about your mother. I am so sorry.
(Marlena can’t control it anymore and throws herself into his arms where he hugs her, strokes her head and tries to calm her. JOhn is watching from his seat but pretends not to notice or care)
Marlena: It wasn’t her time to go.
Roman: Don’t you worry. WEre all here for you.
(Marlena pulls out of his hug smiling)
Marlena: Thank you.
Roman: YOu can sit with us if you’d like.
(Marlena looks at all of them and then looks over at John sitting alone at his table playing withe the equipment)
Marlena: Ummm…no. (she turns to look back at them) I think i’ll be fine…besides Mr. T said no trading.
Roman: Ok. Take care of youself.
(Marlena smiles and then walks over to her table. She stands there for a few seconds staring at JOhn and then speaks)
Marlena: Hello John.
(JOhn looks up and smiles)
JOhn: Hey.
Marlena: Um…I just wanted to say thank you…for saving my life. Im very grateful.
John: No problem. (he pats the seat next to him) Sit.
(Marlena sits down)
TEacher: Class…today you will be working together to come up with your own mix. YOu may use whatever you want. YOu may begin.
John: Alright, so what kind of mix should we make.
(JOhn turns to Marlena and sees that she is shaken up)
JOhn: Marlena…hey…beautiful…Marlena.
Marlena: What?
John: YOu ok? YOu kind of left me there for a second.
Marlena: Oh, im sorry.
JOhn: Hey if you need someone to talk to…(John places his hand on hers on the table and Marlean looks down at it while he talks) Im here for you.
(There is a moment of silence between them and then Marlena pulls her hand from his)
Marlena: Ah…JOhn, can we just do our work.
John: yeah.
Marlena: Alright…we need…five cups of…
JOhn: Hey, your not yourself. YOu need a brake? Maybe you should take off of school for a while.
Marlena: No, no. I can’t do that. no.
JOhn: Look, your mom just died. That is a perfect reason to stay home.
Marlena: I don’t need to be reminded! I know she’s gone! i know it.
JOhn: Hey it’s ok. Look, why don’t i ask the teacher if i can take you home. How does that sound?
Marlena: NO. I can’t. Um…Where were we? Oh yea five cups of sugar.
John: Marlena please…don’t do this to yourself. YOur hurting you need comforting.
(Marlena then throws down the tools that she is holding and starts to cry and yell at the same time)
Marlena: Then comfort me. tell me everythings going to be fine. Tell me i will get my…my mother back and my father and the little brother that i never got to see.
(john grabs Marlena and pulls him to her hugging her trying to calm her down by stroking her head and rubbing her back.)
John: Hey hey, its ok. Mr. T. (The teacher looks up and JOhn point to Marlena asking him if he can take her outside and the teacher nods his head with approval and he helps her out into the hallway where they then make their way outside. They walk to a wall at the far side of the school and John holds on to Marlean keeping her steady) Here…sit down.
(He places her against the wall and lets her slid herself to the ground where she sits down and places her head in her hands and cries. John sits down next to her and rubs her back gently)
Marlena: YOu know…(She pulls her head back up and wipes away the tears) If i would have gotten one more day to say goodbye to my mother. (She looks over at him and he runs his knuckles along her cheek) I would have froze that day in time…kept it forever. Then she would still be here. (She looks away from him as his hand falls down from her face and onto her hand, then she plays with a rock on the ground with her other hand) My mother would stil be walking this earth. But instead she’s lying in the ground somewhere. (She pikcs up her hand and wails the rock) I’ll never see her!
(Marlena slams her palm down on the cement and JOhn tries to stop her)
JOhn: Hey it’s not your fault.
(Marlena grabs hold of his hand and then looks up at him)
Marlena: JOhn come on. Im being punished.
John: PUnished? for what?
Marlena: For not…not wanting to ge like my mother.
JOhn: Ok…explain.
Marlena: My mother she…she was a teacher and she wanted me to be one too. SHe wanted me to marry a man just like my father…(Marlena looks down at JOhn’s hand in hers and every now and then tighlty taps his with he other hand) Rude, obnoxious and a drunk.
(She looks up at the end of the sentence)
John: Why would she want that?
Marlena: I don’t know. That’s how my father died you know. He drank too much one day…and that was it. I never saw him again.
(she looks back down at his hand runing her fingers over it gently with one hand while she held it gently with the other)
John: Sorry.
(Marlena looks back up)
Marlena: Don’t be. I was happy to see him go.
(Marlena lets go of John’s hand and rolls up her pant leg exposing a huge scar from her ankle up to slightly below her knee, She looks over at John as he stares in shock)
John: Wow, what’s that?
Marlena: A scar. (She rolls the pantleg back down) My dad…my dad…well he…
JOhn: It’s ok.
Marlena: He…he…
(Marlean is having a hard time saying the words and she starts to cry)
JOhn: OH god Marlena. Did he…cut you?
Marlena: hmmm hmmmm.
John: My goodness. Why?
Marlena: I don’t know. It’s al my fault that he’s gone. I wished him dead and…and the very next day…but in never wanted her to die. She was all i had left. The only person in the world i ever loved. The only person who ever loved me.
John: Marlena…did your father ever hit you?
Marlena: John please…i can’t talk about this to you.
JOhn: Come on Marlena. Im here for you.
Marlena: Please, drop it. My life is ruined my family is gone.
John: Wow, when you said you’d been through hell..i had no idea.
Marlena: How could you?
John=: Hey im here for you.
Marlena: Why are you being so nice to me? I though you hated me.
John: I don’t hate you. What gave you that idea. OH yeah. The steps. That was an accidet. My friend pushed me.
(Marlena smiles slightly)
Marlena: Yeah and im supposed to believe that.
John: Is it really that hard to believe? (Marlena laughs a little and then stops and bows her head trying to hold back her tears, JOhn touches her hand again) LIsten. I know you’ve been through hell but can you open up to me…let me help you through this? Let me help you put the past behind you? Let me help you froget?
(Marlena looks back up at him and wipes away a few tears)
Marlena: NO, that’s impossible.
John: Marlena… (John runs his knuckles over her face once more catchin a few tears ont he way) Has anyone ever told you how beautiful you are?
Marlena: No.
John: Well im telling you now, your the most beautiful girl i’ve ever met.
(Marlena stares at him for a few seconds and then grabs his hand pulling it away from her face)
Marlena: John i think we better get back to class.
JOhn: NO Marlena. Why do you keep changing the subject?
(Marlena jumps up from where she is sitting and looks down at JOhn while she yells at him)
Marlena: Beacuse i don’t want to talk about this anymore. I don’t want to talk about my mother killing herself or my…my brother dying of premature birth and i sure as hell don’t want to talk about my dog d**n abusive father!
(JOhn jumps up and grabs Marlena’s shoulders when it seems like she may lose control)
JOhn: Hey, hey, hey. Calm down. YOur going to hurt yourself. Come here. (JOhn pulls her to him and hugs her and then pulls away) Now you listen. YOu may not know me too well but im here for you and your friend hope is here for you so make sure you come to use if you ever need anything. WE’ll always be here for you.
Marlena: Thank you JOhn it means a lot.
(Roman is wathcing them out of the window)
Roman: What the hell are they doing out there?
Sarah: Roman! Marlena is hurting…John is just comforting her.
Roman: Why? He doesn’t even know her.
Sarah: Well, who do you expect to comfort her? YOu?
Roman: Yeah.
Sarah: Roman, she doesn’t want you to comfort her. She doesn’t like you anymore let it go. Let her go.
Roman: i can’t.
Sarah: you have to try.
( Marlen pushes JOhn away and walks past him so that he is behind her)
Marlena: I could have stopped it. I could have saved my mom. I cou ld have.
(JOhn walks up in front of her and sotps her)
John: Stop blaming yourself. Hey, chemistry’s almost over, why don’t we go back to class get done as much as we an and we’ll talk more about this later.
Marlena: Thanks but i don’t want to talk about this anymore…especialy to you.
(Marlena takes off once again leaving JOhn in the dust and worried)
John: Mar…oh!
(Marlena comes back into the class)
Teacher: Everything ok?
Marlena: yes.
(JOhn comes running into the classroom)
John: Marlena…(he stops when he sees everyone staring at him and then walks quietly to his seat)
Marlena: Please John…I don’t want to talk about it.
John: why won’t you open up to me? Tell me how you feel?
Marlena: Because i don’t even know you. Why can’t you leave me alone?
John: Beacause im involved now…and there’s no way you can get rid of me. (They stare at one another for a few seconds and then teh bell rings, Marlena jumps up and runs out of the classroom leaving JOhn to bow his head and shake it, Marlena runs into Hope)
Hope: Mar! Hey you ok?
Marlena: NO. IM going home. I’ll see you later
.
HOpe: Marlena!
Marlena: Gotta go!
Spike: Hey JOhn, Where’s your girl?
John: I don’t know. YO HOpe! Where’s Marlena?
HOpe: She went home.
John: HOme? Why?
HOpe: I don’t know.
John: Oh man.
Spike: Dude. what is it?
John: She needs me. (Angel and Spike start lauhing and JOhn looks at them seriously)
John: What’s so funny?
Angel: You…dude. Can’t you see that she doesn’t want to be with you.
John: Oh yeah. Then why did she tell me personal things that she would only tell her closest friend or boyfriend.
Angel: Because she’s upset she has no one else to talk to .
John: What about Hope?
Spike: Woah, he has a point there.
John: See.
Angel: Dude, if your not careful your going to get hurt.
John: Get hurt? What the hell are you talking about?
Spike: Man don’t listen to him. Go for it. CAll her after school.
John: Really?
Spike: Yeah. What’s to lose?
John: Yeah your right.
(A few hours later and Marlena is laying on the couch with the covers on and a box of tissues next to her and then the phone rings, she gets up and walks slowly over to it)
Marlena: Hello.
John: Hey beautiful.
Marlena: Hello JOhn.
John: Is everything ok?
Marlena: Yeah, just needed sometimes alone.
John: I understand.
Marlena: JOhn…Do you remember at school when i told you that i didn’t need you?
John: You said something like that yes.
Marlena: yeah…well i do.
JOhn: You need me?
Marlena: yes.
John: Alright. I’ll be on my way. YOu hand in there ok?
Marlena: ok. (A few moments later JOhn arrives)
Marlena: Hi.
JOhn: HI. I see you hung in there.
Marlena: Yeah.
John: Wow. NIce house. (they are walking into the living room)
Marlena: Yeah, my dad used to be pretty rich.
John: hm…. (He picks up at pic of Marlena mother) Is this your mom?
Marlena: Yep…that’s my mama.
John: Now i see where you get your gorgeous features from.
Marlena: Thank you.
John: and guess what…you just said yep again.
(They both start to laugh as JOhn puts down the pic and turns to face marlena)
Marlena: Did i? oh i didn’t realize it. Would you like something to drink.
JOhn: Sure (Marlena leaves and a few mintues comes back with some ice tea)
Marlena: Here you go.
JOhn: thanks. So…your all alon ein this big ole house.
(Marlena sits down on the couch next to JOhn)
Marlena: let’s not talk aboiut that.
John: ok, well what would you like to talk about?
Marlena: you…and me.
John: I don’t understand.
Marlena: IM talking about us being partener..you know chem lab. We have a project due tomorrow.
John: Oh right.
Marlena: Do you have your part?
JOhn: OH yeah right here. ( He pulls it out of his jacket pocket and Marlena reads it over)
Marlena: Wow John this is very interesting. I never realized how smart you were.
JOhn: Yeah well can’t let that slip in front of the guys? YOU know?
Marlena: Yeah i guess not.
John: ARe you sure you want to do this because we don’t have to.
Marlena: WE don’t realy have much of a choice cutie it’s our homework.
JOhn: What did you just call me?
Marlena: hm?
John: Did you just call me cutie?
Marlena: Yeah JOhn, you are a good looking guy you know.
John: Yeah but i thought you were more into th epopular hotties.
Marlena: JOhn…(She gently brushes her knuckles off of his cheek) you are a popular hottie. (Then she sits down next to him as he watches her smiling) NOw come on let’s get started.
John: yeah.
(Angel and Spike are hanging out at their place)
Spike: So do you think our good buddy went after Marlena?
Angel: Yeah, but he probably didn’t get anywhere.
Spike: Why don’t you have any confidence in him?
Angel: Because Marlena is the type of girl who only dates smart guys and you know John’s not smart.
Spike: He has his moments.
Angel: Spike!
Spike: What? He does.
Angel: Dude come on. It’s not going to happen. Marlena is too high class for Black.
Spike: Yeah we’ll see.
Marlena: Ok, m is equal to c and it combines the mixture of…. (John is staring at Marlena)
John: Beauty.
Marlena: Excuse me?
John: YOur beautiful.
Marlena: John, you’ve already told me that.
John: Yes i know but i can’t help it. YOur just so…(reaches up and touches her face gently) gorgeous.
Marlena: Thank you….ok, the mixture is…
John: Marlena can i ask you a question?
Marlena: John…homework.
John: Do you always hide away when something horrible happens? Do you always block out the ones that try to help you?
Marlena: John…please.
John: Marlena your hurting. YOu don’t have to do this.
Marlena: Yes it’s my homework. It needs done.
JOhn: Marlena, there’s no one to impress anymore.
Marlena: No. no.
John: Beautiful come on. YOu don’t need to do this.
Marlena: Yes yes, i want to be a doctor. I need a good education.
John: Stop holdin gin your pain. Just let it out. Comeon. Ou told me you needed me. Im here. Marlena don’t try to be strong around me. I know what you’ve been through. Stop blocking me out. Just let me in…please.
Marlena: OH god! (Starts crying and throws herself into his arms and he hugs her tightly stroking her head and tryign to calm her down)
JOhn: See that wasn’t so hard.(Marlena pulls away and stares at him)
Marlena: JOhn, thank you for being here. I don’t know what i would have done.
JOhn: You don’t worry. Im here and i’ll stay until you want me to leave.
Marlena: Never. Don’t ever leave me.
John: You listen to me. I will always be here for you. YOu just remember that.
(Marlena stares at him sweetly closes her eyes and then moves in toward him about to kiss him and then JOhn grabs her shoulders pushing her away)
John: NO…i can’t do this. Your hurting. I won’t take advantage of you when your this vulnerable. I can’t do it.
Marlena: JOhn, i want you to kiss me. YOur not taking advantage of me if i want you to kiss me. Please?
John: ARe you sure?
Marlena: More than i’ll ever be.
(John stares at her for a few seconds and then moves in and kisses her sweetly then he pulls away again and looks around him, then marlena grabs his face and turns it back to look at him)
Marlena: It’s ok John. My dad and my mom are gone. No one can stop us.
JOhn: Stop us from what? (Marlena stares at him and smiles in a silly but sexy way and then john is shocked) OH no marlena. We can’t do that. I can’t do that to you when your hurting. I can’t.
Marlena: John, this is also something that i want to do.
John: Marlena i just don’t know.
Marlena: LIsten to me cutie. (Brushes her hand off of his cheek) I have waited for this since the ninth grade. WEre doing this.
JOhn: what?
Marlena: That’s right adorable. I’ve been admiring you for four years now.
JOhn: Why didn’t you say anything?
Marlena: What, and ruin my reputation? (They start laughing and then JOhn runs his hand over her face)
Marlena: But now im sure. and i’ve never been more sure of anything in my life.
John: but you do know that once we do this…there is no turning back.
Marlena: Yes.
John: Alright. (JOhn picks her up gently and carries her upstairs to make love to her for the first time)
(It is the next morning and JOhn and Marlena are lay8ing in bed together and John wakes up and smiles when he sees marlena, he leans over on her side and kisses her lighlty on the cheek and then on her arm)
John: Beautiful, it’s time to get up. Were going to be late for school. (John kisses her on the cheek as she moves around and she smles and then she opens her eyes and is surprised to see JOhn in her bed she pulls away from him)
MArlena: OH! Oh my gosh! JOhn!
John: What babe? What is it?
Marlena: Im sorry. Im just not used to waking up with anyone in my bed. (Marlena starts to get out of bed and then JOhn grabs her shoulder stopping her and she turns aroudn to look at him)
John: hey, you don’t regret what we did last night do you?
Marlena: NO, not at all.
John: Ok. (John kisses her gently on the lips and then gets up) I’ll see you downstairs. (he grabs his pants and leaves the room, Marlena sits in teh bed as she stares at teh door way and then she throws herself back on teh bed touching her forehead with the back of her hand)
Marlena: Oh my gosh. I can’t believe i actually did this. What was i thinking?
(Later on at school, Marlena comes in late and so does JOhn wearing the same clothes as teh day before)
Hope: Marlena, what happened?
Marlena: Nothing, just had a hard time waking up this morning that’s all.
(Hope sees John coiming in and then smiles)
Hope: Marlena, your lying. (She points to John as he stares at Marlena and when marlena looks at him he smiles and walks to his seat.)
HOpe: Marlean, what did you two do last night?
marlena: Nothing.
HOpe: OH my god did you two…
Marlena: no! NOw drop it!
Spike: Hey man.
John: hey.
Angel: Dude, why are you wearing the same clothes that you wore yesterday? (John looks at marlena and puts his finger to his lips)
JOhn: Just a long night.
Spike: Dude, what the hell happened?
John: Drop it.
Spike: No, i won’t drop it. Did something hapen between you two last night?
JOhn: Let’s just say that little miss classy marlena evans is no longer a virgin.
Spike: What? You guys had sex last night?
John: Yeah. It was pretty wonderful.
Spike: Ok that’s great but…who’s next?
John: What?
Spike: Well you got one classy popular girl into bed with you who’s the next one?
John: Dude, there is no next one. (Looks over at Marlena and watches her as she smiles while she is talking to Hope) Marlena is it. She is the only girl for me.
Spike: What? Dude, your out of your mind. You sleep with the girl one time and you think she’ syour soulmate. come on. Dude,t here are so many other girls out there just waiting for a guy like you to take away their virginity.
John: Well then you can have them big guy…im already taken.
(The bell rings and they head to lunch)
Marlena: Hope, i realy need to talk to you.
Hope: What is it Mar?
Marlena: Well…you might want to sit down for this.
HOpe: Why? Marlena is everything ok?
Marlena: Please HOpe just sit down. (HOpe sits down)
Ok now what i am about to tell u, u may not believe but…it is entirely true. John and i we sort of…well…we made love last night.
HOpe: oh my god are you serious?
Marlean: Yes.
HOpe: well…was it wonderful? Was it everythign that u dreame dit would be?
marlena: Yes, yes. All that and more.
HOpe: That’s what u wanted to tell me? That’s what u sounded so upset about. Whew thank goodness i thoguht that u were going to tell me that u were pregnant or something. (Hope starts laughing and marlena only stares at her not saying a word. Marlena looks down at the table in front of her as a tear rolls down her cheek and lands on her tray, then when hope realizes that marlena is not laughing with her she looks up and see marlena and knows then what is going on she stands up and walks over to her wrapping her arms around her)
HOpe: Marlena….are you sure?
(Marlena nods her head as she wipes away some tears)
Marlena: Yes, i just found out this morning. HOpe waht am i going to do? Im only eighteen.
HOpe: Sweetheart, im here. I always have been here and i always will. (HOpe pulls out of hug and then pushes the hair out of marlena’s face on both sides.)
There’s jsut the hard task of teling JOhn. YOu have to tell John that u are having his baby.
(Drake, Spike, and Angel are at football practice after school and are fooling around)
Angel: Dude, you must have had a great time with Marlena last night. You haven’t stopped smiling since you got to school.
John: Well you would be too if you found the girl of your dreams.
Spike: Dude, your eighteen. You can’t find the girl of your dreams at eighteen.
John: Sure i can. I make her feel good about herself and that’s what makes me so special to her.
Spike: Dude, what have you done with my friend John?
John: Knock it off man.
Coach: Alright boys let’s get this play together.
(The cheerleaders are the sidelines practicing and JOhn looks over and stares as he sees Marlena staring back at him with a saddened look on her face holding her pom poms at her side. John stares at her)
Coach: hey Black! Stop staring at those cheerleaders and come on! There out of your league. (John looks back at the coach and then at Marlena and smiles and then runs after his players) (Marlena continues to stare after him until she hears HOpe caling out to her)
Hope: Mar! Mar!
Marlena: What?
HOpe: The rest of your squad…is over there. (She points across the field and Marlena looks)
Marlena: What? Im the captain. THey are supposed to listen to me.
HOpe: Well obviously there is someone or something else that has caught their attention.
(Marlena looks at hope and then her squad and runs over to where they are and she can hear them all talking amongst each other.)
Marlena: Hey, who said that you girls could come over here.
(The girls turn to look at her and then move to the side exposing John with his back to everyone and his arms down at his side holding his helmet staring at the bulletin board. She doesn’t know what to say and steps up so that she can read what he is reading over his shoulder. As she reads, she can’t believe what she is seeing and she gasps and covers her mouth. John hears her and turns around and before he can touch her or say anything she drops her pom poms and runs for the bathroom.)
John: Marlena!
HOpe: Mar! Wait!
(Spike and Angel see what is going on and come over)
Spike: Hey man what is going on?
(John does not turn to them and only stares after Marlena)
John: Marlena’s pregnant.
(Angel and spike step back)
Angel: I told you. I told you that something like this was going to happen.
(John turns and looks at Angel, the he looks at everyone around him)
John: Ok, who did this? Who put this bulletin up here? Tell me now!
(he looks around angerly and no one answers him)
JOhn: Fine i will just take it straight to the principle and have him find out. (He turns to the bulletin rips the paper from the board and heads toward the principles office, Spike and Angel watch him and then turn to each other)
Angel: Our buddy has gotten himself into a hell of a lot of trouble.
Spike: YOu got that right.
(Hope runs into the bathroom after Marlena)
Hope: Marlena! Marlena!
(She can hear her crying in one of the stalls and walks up to the door, she knocks lightly on it)
HOpe: Marlena? Come on, takl to me. What hapened?
Marlena: (crying) It’s ruined. My whole entire high school career, future, reputation, all of it is ruined.
HOpe: Mar, what happened over at that bulletin?
(Marlena steps out of the stall and looks at HOpe)
Marlena: Someone posted up a bulletin saying that i was pregnant.
HOpe: Oh Marlena. (Hugs her)
Marlena: He wasn’t supposed to find out this way Hope.
(Hope pulls out of the hug and stares at Marlena)
HOpe: He wasnt’ supposed to find out this way…or he wasn’t supposed to find out at all?
(Marlena only stares at HOpe and doesn’t say a word)
(John busts into the principles office scaring him half to death and walks up to his desk. He stops in front of it and stares down at the principle then he pushes the paper onto his desk)
John: Mr. Jagger, i found this on the school bulletin board. (The principle takes it from him and looks it over and then looks up at JOhn)
Mr. Jagger: Why are you bringing this to me?
John: Well i was hoping that you can do something.
Mr. Jagger: I can’t do anything. It’s not my fault that the dumb blonde got herself
knocked up. (John becomes really angry and walks around the desk grabbing him by his shirt and lifting him up slightly from his chair.)
John: Marlena is not a dumb blonde. She is beautiful and caring and very VERY smart.
Mr. Jagger: Ok, ok, i believe you just please…put me down. (John stares at him for a few seconds and then he gently puts him back down in his chair)
JOhn: Now look,i want you to find out who put this on that bulletin board. Do you think you can do that?
Mr. Jagger: Mr. Black i am a principle not an investigative reporter.
John: YOu do it….or i will have you fired. (then he storms out of the room slamming the door behind him)
(Hope and Marlena continue to stare at one another as Marlena tries to process what
HOpe has just said to her)
HOpe: Well Marlena is that what this is all about? YOur upset because John found out and you didn’t want him to? Is that what it is? (Marlena doesn’t say anythign as tears begin to form in her eyes, HOpe shakes her)
HOpe: Is that what is is Marlena?
(Marlena lets her tears fall uncontrollably as she pushes HOpe away and walks over to the sink placing her palms on the edge and looking downward.)
Marlena: He wasn’t supposed to HOpe. He wasn’t supposed to find out about it.
Hope: What?
Marlena: I wasn’t going to tell him.
HOpe: Well what were you going to say when your stomach grew over the next nine months. (Marlena looks up and then turns around)
Marlena: NOthing because my stomach is not going to grow over the next nine months.
(HOpe stares at Marlena in silence and then Marlena touches her stomach with her hand while looking down and then she looks back up at hope)
Marlena: I wasnt’ planning on keepnig it.
(John comes busting out of the school and back onto the field)
Spike: Hey dude, what happened?
(John continues to walk while he is talking)
John: I told Mr. Jagger that if he didn’t find out who put up that bulletin that i would have him fired.
Spike: What?
Angel: YOu told him off?
John: Yes.
Spike: Alright pal that solves one problem but there’s still the unsolvable problem of
Marlena….dude she’s having your child. (John stops walking and turns to Spike)
John: What is there to solve?
Spike: WEll Marlena is having your baby. YOur both eighteen.
John: and?
Angel: JOhn, your not really thinking of keepnig this baby are you?
John: Why not?
Angel: Oh my god! My worst nightmare is coming true. JOhn…my man…you can’t raise
a child.
JOhn: Why not?
Angel: Ok, back to reality. Your in high school.
John: And? (Starts to walk again) I can raise a child and go to school.
Coach: Hey guys, get over here. What do you think this is…social hour…come on!
John: Yea come on boys this isnt’ social hour. What are we a bunch of girls? (John smiles and pats them both on the back and runs over to the coach, Angel and Spike both look at one another)
Angel: He’s gotten himself into a hell of a lot of trouble.

(They run after John)
(hope stares at Marlena in complete silence and when Marlena sees the look in HOpe’s eyes she looks down)

HOpe: Because it goes against everythign that you believe in.
(Marlena looks up with more tears in her eyes)
Marlena: Getting pregnant at eighteen with John Black goes against everythign that i believe it.
(Hope walks up to Marlena and grabs her shouders)
Hope: Listen to me Mar. YOu’ve lied to me and JOhn for four years don’t lie to yourself. YOu want this. YOu need this.
Marlena: Not when im eighteen years old i don’t. HOpe…what if he doesn’t want it? What if it was a mistake? What if…
HOpe: your not even pregnant?
Marlena: What?
HOpe: Marlena you don’t even know if you are pregnant. You told me that you think that you are but…you don’t know for sure.
(Marlena stares at her and then she starts to cry covering her mouth with her hand)
HOpe: Honey, what’s wrong?
Marlena: I just realized when you said that, that it could be true. I may not really be
pregnant.
Hope: I know and then everything will be fine.
Marlena: no, HOpe you don’t understand. Someone posted up a bulletin about me being pregnant…and if im not…everyone is going to think i am…including JOhn.
(A few hours later and John, Angel, and Spike are hanging out and Spike and Angel are playing a video game while John is sitting in his big chair thinking really hard, spike and angel start talking about him right in front of him without ever look away from teh game)
Spike: He’s whipped.
Angel: Yea i know. He reads one sign sayin that his girl is pregnant and he
automatically goes into physco mode.
Spike: Yea i know, he’s so zoned out he looks like my uncle tom.

Spike: (Starts laughing) Yea! (Angel laughs too)
JOhn: Dude, i can hear you.
(Spike pauses the game and they both look at JOhn)
Spike: Really? (John looks at them and then stands up)
John: Yeah. And i know what you are saying and im sorry. This isn’t something that i should be excited about im only eighteeen years old. I can’t have a baby. Espeically with Marlena. What was i thinking. (John starts to pace and then Angel and Spike look at one another and then stand up)
Angel: Alright man, ignore everything that we just said.
John: What?

(HOpe and Marlena are at HOpe’s house and are standing in the bathroom. HOpe is sitting on the toilet seat while Marlena is pacing back and forth)

Marlena: Ok i did but i never thought anything like this would happen. (Then the timer dings and both hope and Marlena look over at the timer, Marlena looks back at HOpe and then looks back over at HOpe)
Marlena: Well this is it. The moment of truth. (Marlena walks over to the pregnancy test and picks it up slowly, HOpe watches her as she then starts to cry and brings her hand to her mouth covering it, Hope walks over an dplaces her hands on Marlena’s shoulders, John walks past the window to knock on the door and when he hears Marlena crying he stops outside the window and stares in and can hear what they are talking about)
Hope: HOney, what is it?
(Marlena turns around)
Marlena: I…i am pregnant. JOhn and I are going to have a baby.
(John stares in at her as a tear rolls slowly down his cheek)
JOhn: Im having a baby.
All Marlena and Hope could do was stare down at the test and they didn’t say a word. Marlena was so nervous that she couldn’t even cry. She didn’t know how JOhn would react. Then suddenly the doorbell rang and broke them both out of their trance. Marlena quickly threw the test into the garbage and then went to answer the door.
Marlena: John? What are you doing here?
John: Hello Marlena, how are you?
Marlena: Fine.
John: Ummm. I was just wondering…I have to go and meet a friend and i was wondering if you would like to come with me?
Marlena: Ummm. (She looks back at Hope who nods her head and then she looks back
at JOhn) Ok.
John: Great. Come on.
(marlena looked at HOpe and then she looked back at JOhn then smiled and left with him)
Marlena: OH my gosh. Were not walking?
John: No, were going on the motorcycle.
Marlena: Oh JOhn, i don’t think that i can go on the motorcycle.
John: Why are you scared?
Marlena: NO.
John: Then come on.
Marlena: Umm, JOhn…I don’t think that i can.
John: Why what’s up?
Marlena: Nothing. Come on.
John: here put this on. (John helps Marlena put on her helmet and then they both climb on the motorcycle and Marlena wraps her arms around him holding him tightly and closes her eyes feeling so good just being close to him, then they drive off. Later they stop in a park and Marlena looks around in suspicioun)
Marlena: John, what are we doing here?
(John climbs off of the bike and then helps Marlena off)
John: We need to talk.
Marlena: Uh oh, i know what that means.
John: I don’t think you do. (He sits down on the ground, pulls her down next to him he runs his fingers over her cheek)
John: Sweetheart, is there somethign that you need to tell me?
Marlena: No.
John: Are you sure. (Marlena looks down at her stomach and then places her hand on it and looks bacckm at John)
Marlena: Yes im sure. (Seh looks down again and John places his hand on her stomaqch along with hers)
John: Marlena…i know.
(Marlena looks back up at him)
Marlena: You nkow what?
JOhn: I know about our baby.
Marlena: What baby? What are you talking about?
John: Marlena, you don’t have to lie to me anymore. I know about it and i have to say…i couldn’t be happier. (He leans down and kisses her stomach, marlena looks down at him and starts to cry)
Marlena: Well you shoulnd’t be happy because i got rid of it.
(John looks up at her)
John: What are you takling about?
Marlena: I got rid of it. I got an abortion.
JOhn: Not you didn’t
Marlena: Yes i did. I did, i did.
John: Marlena, i just saw you take the test in your bathroom so i know that you didn’t get rid of it.
Marlena: You…you were spying on me?
John: Yes, but i didn’t mean to. I was coming to your house and then i walked past your window and i could hear you and HOpe talking and Marlena…I want to have this baby with you.
Marlena: John, no. YOu weren’t supposed to find out. I was supposed to get rid of it before you found out.
JOhn: No i won’t let you get rid of it. Marlena don’t you understand…the only time that i have ever been happy in my entire life….is when i’m with you. You can’t do this. I want to have this baby with you, can’t you see that.
Marlena: (crying and smiling) Yes, i see that.
John: So what do you say? ARe you going to get rid of it?
Marlena: (Strokes John’s cheek) No im not going to get rid of it. (Then she pulls him to her and they kiss falling back on the grass then they pull out)
Marlena: So what were you thinking when you saw that sign?
JOhn: I dind’t know what to think at first and then i realized how much i loved you and wanted to be with you and i knew that i would do anythign for you and then i realizede that, that baby will be a part of you and me and anything that is that little and is as beautiful as you can’t be that bad.
Marlena: Your so sweet. But there is still one mystery that we haven’t solved….Who hung the sign?
(Kristen is hiding behind a tree)
Kristen: That bitch. Even after i hung that sign telling JOhn that Marlena was pregnant he still wants to be with ehr. He even took her on his motorcycle for goodness sakes. I never get to ride on the motorcycle and it looks like i never will. (Loolks over at the motorcycle) it’s just so beautiful (Loolks back at John) and he’s so beautiful. That’s it. I have to do something else. I have to come up with some other manipulative plan to split then apart or else3…..i will never get to ride the motorcycle or John.
It’s the next day and everyone standing outside of the school can hear the sounds of a motorcycle approaching and everyone looks in the direction of the sound. Kristen who had stopped and put her foot up on a wall to tie her shoe looked up and put her foot back down on the ground. John came speeding up on his motorcycle with Marlena on the back holdin on to him tightly and smiling. Kristen knew that she couldn’t see her but she gave her a dirty look anyway. JOhn stopped the motorcycle and climbed off and then helped Marlena off. He unsnapped her helmet for her and set it on teh back of the bike and everyone watched as he then placed both of his hands on either side of her face and kissed her gently on the lips. no one could believe that Marlena Evans and John Black were kissing or let alone having a baby together. It was easy to tell that everyone knew about it by then and Marlena didn’t even care. John and Marlena pulled out of their kiss and they smiled at one another.
John: You ready gorgeous?
Marlena: yes, but John…do you really think that this is appropriate? (She looked down at herself and John followed her gaze. She was wearing a mini skirt with ruffles that was pink and a white tank top belly shirt. She looked wonderful. Her hair was pulled back in a half ponytail with a pink hairtie.
John: You look incredible, now come on. (John grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the school. Marlena didn’t realize it but they had run right past HOpe without even seeing her. Hope watched them as they disappeared and then Bo came up beside her)
Bo: I see now that Marlena is with John and is popular that she is ignoring you. (Hope turns around)

(She runs into the school with Bo following after her) (John and Marlena walk into the classroom hand in hand as the whole class lets out a big “whooooo” Marlena blushes and smiles and John kisses her lightly on the cheek as they go to their seats. Hope comes in after them and sits down behind Marlena)

(John and Marlena are sitting in chemistry the same day)

Doctor: She’s fine. She wants to see you.

Doctor: Just fine.

Marlena: It’s ok. You didn’t know. John i was so scared. He said that when he was finished with me i wouldn’t be pregnant anymore but i am i still am. It’s all thanks to you. If you hadn’t come in when you did i think that you would have lost me and our baby.
