Today My World Slipped Away – George Strait – Carrying Your Love With Me 1997
(Mark Wright/ Vern Gosdin)
We made it final today
I gave you all I had you made your get away
All the love we once made, turned to memories today
I left the courtroom and went straight to the church
I hit my knees and told God how much I hurt
Nothin’ left of my heart, it’s gonna be so hard to make a new start
John pulled the collar of his leather coat tighter to his face. The wind bit into him with a severe harshness that he’d not felt in quite sometime. Seemed fitting for him to feel this way. The end of his marriage was just weeks away, and his soul was beginning to crumble inside of him.
He’d finally come to terms with his past and all the destruction he had been the instigator of. All the violence that had once consumed his very soul, all the hate that ate away at his being. He hated the fact that he’d gone after all of this, and what it had done to his life and above all, his wife.
She had asked him, no begged him not to go and dig into his past. Something had spoken to her and told her that this was all wrong. Time after time, she had spoken to him, only to have his inquiring mind turn away from her. Finally, she had all she could and had to stop it all before it stopped her.
She’d made him leave the penthouse, not really sure of what she was doing. He had begged her and pleaded with her to work it out, anything to make it better. Her eyes had become void of the fire and passion that once filled them. His heart sank as he realized he’d broken her and now, he didn’t know how to fix her. She’d run up the stairs, leaving him to go in silence.
Then, came the call to meet her attorney at the courthouse, the final nail in a coffin he’d built himself into. Now, he was alone. Walking around in the freezing cold, oblivious to the mist that pelted him like thousands of tiny shards, he prayed for some sort of sign, some devine presence.
St. Luke’s window’s painted a warm glow in the dreary night. It’s warm glow wrapped around John like a down quilt. Coming to the doors, he closed his eyes and drew in a large breath. Taking the strength from his Lord, he drew the doors open and stepped inside.
The candles flickered in the dark room; John genuflected, finding it hard to return to his feet to talk with God. Tears burned in his eyes, his face flushed crimson with embarrassment for what he’d done. Kneeling down, he bowed his head, afraid to look up and feel the shame that had washed over him the minute he had walked into the sanctuary.
Finally, he raised his head toward the giant stained glass window that took residence in the front. It calmed him somehow and soothed his soul slightly. Tears began to travel down his face, his chin trembled with emotion. Somehow, John began to speak through the tears that choked in his throat.
“Dear Lord, I know I have come to you many… many times. I have been so blessed by you and everything you do for me.” John clasped his hands tighter together and brought them to his forehead. “Lord, I… I just don’t know how to fix this! I am at a loss here. I can’t be without her. I know you made us for each other. I know we have done things that are not right, and we are not perfect by any means. I am here to say, if you will give me another chance…” John’s eyes flowed with tears and his hands began to lose circulation from the grip they had on each other. “Another chance. How many chances can I ask for? Lord I need her and my heart will never be the same again if I lose her. If I get another chance, I swear I will never take another moment for granted. I will never go into my past again, if she doesn’t want me too. I will do all I can to make this right!”
John’s knees sank further and his body collapsed onto his heels. Crying like he had never before, John knew it was all in God’s hands now, and if it was in His will then his Marlena would be back with him.
Cause today, my world slipped away
We buried the plans that we made
And tonight I’m alone and afraid
Cause today, my world slipped away
Marlena walked down the steps of her home away from her bedroom. Her once regal and elegant stance had been replaced with a dejected and slumped walk. Her face was drowned in tears that seemed to never end from her eyes.
Her fingernails dug into her palm, clasping the garnet necklace that John had given her not too long ago. Reaching the end of the stairs, she crumpled to the floor. Her body shook with the great cries that ravaged her body and soul. Never in her wildest nightmares did this happen, never did she let John go. Now, she was alone. She’d been alone before and made it through, but now was a completely different thing.
She hadn’t wanted to be without him, but she’d asked him so many times and he’d only ignored her. Some other force had taken him over and now, she was paying the piper. She didn’t know how to exist without him. She didn’t want a life without him, but how could she be with him when he didn’t want to be a team. Her hands drifted through her hair and clasped at the back of her neck, forcing her eyes heavenward. Tears seeped out of the corners of her eyes.
“What happened? What did I do? My life is nothing without him!” Her mouth quivered and a sob escaped her lips and was swallowed by the night air that clung to the house. The necklace untangled from her fingers and went sliding to the floor, where it remained unseen.
All my friends say I’ll make it all right
I’ll recover and start a new life
But that’ll be so hard to do
cause livin’ ain’t worth livin’
without you
The night had eased it’s grip on the day and the sun was beginning it’s journey heaven ward. Marlena awoke on the couch, her body gripped in a vice of numbness and stiffness. Her eyes had bore the brunt of tears that had made their way out of her eyes last night. Her mind had played many a scenario in her dreams last night, none of them ending the way they had in real life.
She pulled herself up and buried her head in her hands, wanting reality to be the dream. Through out all of the mess, she tried to believe all the things her friends and family had said… “You can’t stay like this forever Marlena.” “You’ve got to go on with your life.” “You have children, you have a job.” “You have to stay strong.” Marlena tried to psych herself up with all of their encouraging words, but her heart still ached too much. “Who are you kidding?” She fell back to the sofa, the tears making a return performance.
Cause today, my world slipped away
we buried the plans that we made
And tonight I’m alone and afraid
Cause today, my world slipped away
Cause today, my world slipped away
John awoke as the morning sun crawled it’s way through his curtains. Feeling the pounding in his head, he knew that last night had been a reality and this was no hangover ache, it was the most intense hurt that seeped through his body. Marlena was his life, his very reason for being. His eyes instinctively roamed until they fell upon the picture of them he’d brought with him from the penthouse. They were so happy, so much in love. All the things they had wanted to do, all the dreams for the future had been snuffed out like a match. “It’s all my fault. How could I do this to her, to us?” John felt his life crumbling on the foundation that he had built with his beloved Marlena. Would they ever be able to get back to where they once were? Or was this the end, and the world as they knew it just a memory.
I’ve Got a Funny Feeling – George Strait – Carrying Your Love With Me 1997
(Harlan Howard/ Jackson Leap)
Well my baby’s wearin’ a permanent smile
A satisfied look I ain’t seen for a while
I ain’t had no raise, fulfilled any dreams
But somethin’s come over my baby it seems
It had been two months since they had made the divorce final. Those days were sheer hell for both of them. But lately, Marlena had been seen at more and more social functions. Her visage had started to gain back some of that vigor and sparkle it once had painted all across it. If possible, she looked more radiant and beautiful than ever.
John, on the other hand, had not faired as well. He hardly ever made the town scene and had become something of a hermit. This night on the other hand, was one he wasn’t about to miss. This night held so many memories, and maybe, just maybe, they would spark the match that would set his life back aflame. Titan’s fundraiser/ ball was quite the social event, and it was where John and Marlena had finally conceded that they were in deed in love with each other. John straightened his bow tie and smoothed his tux coat out. Tonight would be the night, and all of the dreams would become a reality again.
Marlena ran her hands down the front of her skirt, letting the silken material run through her fingers. She had tried to go on with her life, even dating a few men, but none of them were John. None of them could ever hold a candle to him. There was not one soul in this world that could love her like he did or be loved by her like he was. But it was that same love that had almost ruined her. Never again was she going to let a man do that to her, never. She still needed to have a life and be as alive as she could, so tonight would be the rebuilding of her soul and her dreams.
John entered the Penthouse Grill to find the party going full steam. His eyes wandered the place looking for some sign of his heart’s desire. His head nodded towards the floor. “Maybe she’s not coming. She’d know I would be here.” John turned to go when a noise that he knew all to well caught his ears. She was here, she was happy. Turning on his heel, his eyes sought her form like a homing beacon. The target finally came into sight.
She looked radiant. Her dress a bright fuchsia that hung to just above her ankles, hugging every curve. The dress paled in comparison to her face, it was beaming and youthful. She seemed so at peace, so… over John. The men around her were dazzled by her charm and elegance.
John put his hand to his heart when he heard her laugh. It was a sound that drove daggers into his soul when that laugh wasn’t put there by him. That laugh that so many times made his day. He hadn’t put that giggle there with anything he’d done recently, or further back in time for that matter. He didn’t know what had put that smile there, but he was going to find out. And then he was going to punch his lights out.
I’ve got a funny feelin’ somebody’s stealin’ my honey
Lord, I love that child love to see her smile
But these circumstances ain’t funny
Where lies the danger, is he a stranger or a pal
I’ve got a funny feelin’ somebody’s stealin’ my gal
John walked over to where Marlena stood, a Scarlett surrounded by her beaus. With each laugh that bubbled from her lungs, John became even more incensed. Fist began to form at his sides. He closed his eyes and tried to calm himself, relishing her giggle, wishing he’d been the one to put it there. Standing just feet from her, he watched her. The smile that painted her face made his heart fill with love and devotion to her. John wondered who had healed her heart so well. She was becoming the old Marlena, the one he fell so hard in love with, and standing here so close to her, he remembered why.
“Who is it?” His mind kept asking the same question over and over again. The mixture of her perfume, her beauty and her laughter overwhelmed him and he turned to leave. Looking back over his shoulder at her, he vowed to find whoever was putting that smile on her face. Be it stranger or someone that he knew, they were going to lose and he would be the victor of fair Marlena’s heart once again.
If I came home early Lord what would I find
Maybe I’d rather just walk around blind
I know baby loves me Lord I understand
I know how emotions can get out of hand
The night had ended and all the partygoers had drifted home. Marlena had hoped that John would be there, not knowing how close he actually was. She had once sensed his presence, catching a whiff of what she thought was his smell, sending a shiver up her spine. Turning, she passed it off as a dream when he was nowhere to be found. Opening the door to the penthouse, she paused before stepping in. A sigh escaped her lips. She slid the wrap off of her shoulders and threw it over the desk chair.
“Well, Marlena, here you are again. Alone and home early.” She ran her hands up and down her arms, trying to shake some imaginary shiver. She didn’t know why she thought maybe John would be there, that maybe something would come of the night. She shook her head to rid it of those thoughts and started up the stairs, sorry Brady and Belle had given her space and the night to herself.
John looked up at the ceiling. His heart beat fast and his hands gripped into fists. He wanted to go to Marlena’s and talk to her, find out what was going on. He had kept his distance for too long and was at risk of ever trying to get her back. This divorce was never meant to happen and it was the wrong thing for both of them. John pulled his tie off, throwing it on the cabinet. Pulling his hands through his hair, he blew out a breath. His heart told him to go to Marlena and settle all of this now, while there was still a tiny flame burning. His head told him different, maybe he would find her in a situation that he wasn’t ready to handle at the moment. He knew there was still that love they shared, but she had apparently moved on with her life. John’s fists curled up at his sides. His emotions had taken the best out of him before and gotten him nowhere.
Marlena retreated back down the stairs, her nightgown kissing the floor. She didn’t like to sleep in her bedroom anymore; there were too many memories, too many passion filled nights. She piled up on the couch and pulled the light blanket over her tired body.
For months now, she’d tried to convince herself she was over John, that she could get on with her life. The old Marlena could, but the old Marlena didn’t have John Black in her life. He’d put so many new facets into her life and thrown out many of the old ones. She still had that fierce determination, that independence that she so cherished. But with John, it had mixed so well with his own traits that somehow, what she felt was what he felt. They were so in tune, but his search for his past and that all consuming desire to find out what happened to him, began to eat away at the strands that held them so tightly together.
Her eyes fought the sleep that pulled them close, and the dreams of a happier John and Marlena that was sure to follow. Finally succumbing to the dance that the sandman flitted on her lids, she smiled as the memories came back and sweetened her dreams. He would probably never know that these dreams are what kept her going and put the laughter back in her heart and the smile to her lips. These dreams of them happy and in love were healing her heart, even if it were only in her imagination. They were once real, and maybe after all was said and done they could be real again.
Wherever he is well, I’m callin’ his bluff
I’m gonna start wearin’ that good smellin’ stuff
And I’ll be the lover that I used to be
Whatever she’s missin’, she’ll get it from me
John paced the floor, his hands wringing each other with great vigor. His mind played out so many variations of her and her new life. Each one played out the same, she told him to get lost and that she didn’t need him any more. Each time, John felt a kick to his stomach and the pain in his head increased with a greater intensity. Finally, his pacing ceased. He rested his head on his hands, wondering what he could do to rectify they situation.
Snapping his fingers, he realized that two could play this game and it might even be fun. This was a fight to the finish, whomever was bringing that smile, that sparkle back to Marlena’s face, was about to meet his match. He was tired of walking on the proverbial eggshells, now was the time to crack that egg and what came out.
Jumping the railing on the stairway, he jubilantly headed toward his room to get some much-needed sleep. Tomorrow was the beginning of the end of this mess he’d caused. Now, it was only a question of how to woo the love of his life back. Falling into the bed, dress shirt and all, he smiled and clapped his hands together. He’d be the man she first fell in love with. He pumped his fists in excitement, knowing just how to get her to remember. From his smell to the small things that meant so much to her, he was going to inhabit her life again, and make her long for the old days. This was gonna be fun!

Lord, I love that child love to see her smile
But these circumstances ain’t funny
Where lies the danger, is he a stranger or a pal

She’ll Leave You With A Smile – George Strait – Carrying Your Love With Me 1997 (Jackson Leap)
I can see your fallin’ for her
Friend you know she once was mine
So I guess I oughta warn you
Cause your showin’ all the signs
Another month had come and gone, John and Marlena saw less and less of each other. Hoping it was better to heal the heart that had been shattered, Marlena made a point of staying away from functions she knew John would be at and only finding out about him through her children’s eyes. She knew she couldn’t keep running for long and it was only a matter of time before she saw him with someone else or he saw her with someone. Not that she had anyone serious, but she still went out on an occasion with a colleague at times. When things got to heavy of a burden on her, it was always nice to find someone who could save her from a night of memories at home. Tonight was one of those times and she was pleasantly surprised when a familiar face smiled at her when she opened the door.
John had decided to take a break from his plot to gain Marlena back; so far he’d hardly seen her to do any good anyhow. He’d called Sami and asked her for a ‘date’. She was more than happy to oblige him, still feeling he was very much her father. They made quite the pair in their dressy attire.
Arriving at Tuscany, they were greeted by a rather perplexed looking Dave. He placed them in a far corner and handed them their menus. Sami looked around, admiring the wonderful dĂƒcor when her eyes fell to the couple across the room from them. Her mouth fell open and her eyes widened in shock. Her mother was setting there with another man! John’s hand on hers brought her out of her trance.
“Sami, honey, is something wrong?” John started to turn his head, but Sami caught his attention before he could make it around.
“Uh, John, it’s nothing really. Just a guy I was seeing a while back. He’s here with another girl. Kinda hurts.” She hated lying to him like that, but she would hate it even more to see him in pain.
“Well, let’s just have a look, shall we.” John’s face lit up at the chance to tease his ‘daughter’. They’d come so far, and this sort of teasing was a regular occurrence now. Sami reached over to stop him but the damage had been done and he’d seen her.
She was dressed in a stunning outfit. The black pinstriped sheath fell just above her knees. Her hair was pinned up in a seemingly haphazard way that John found so attractive. She looked so simple, yet to John, she was the most stunning woman in the place. Sami stood next to John, hooking her arm into his and leaning her head onto his shoulder.
“I’m sorry John. I tried to stop you. I didn’t want you to see her.” John tore his glance away from his love and placed a tender hand on Sami’s head, leaning over to place a kiss on top of the golden tresses.
“Hey, it’s okay. She can be with who ever she wants. We aren’t married anymore. But see, I have a beautiful date and I think I am neglecting her, so…” Sami smiled at John’s attempt to make light of the fact his heart was breaking. She knew John was so in love with her mother and it pained her to see him so hurt.
“Well then Mr. Black, I think we need to set down and chow down. Whaddya say?” She hugged his arm and smiled up to his face.
“I say…” He looked over and saw Marlena get up and leave the room, probably to freshen up. “I say set right down there, and I will return shortly.” He kissed Sami’s forehead and made his way to the table from where Marlena had just come.
Jordan Barr watched Marlena go with an appreciative stare. This trip was even better than he’d imagined. She was free and had accepted his proposal to go to dinner. Things were looking up; he’d finally been delt the hand with the queen in it. His thoughts were clipped though by a rather upset looking man standing just beside the table. Reaching his hand over to the stranger, Jordan was rather put off when the man simply stared at him for a moment.
“I’m sorry, I don’t believe I caught you’re name. I’m Jor…” The man held his hand up and shook his head before Jordan could get another syllable out.
“No need for introductions. I see you’re out with Marlena. You know that’s a really special woman, and I can see, just by looking at you, that she’s something special to you. Well, if that’s the case, friend, you’d better watch your step.” John leaned over to Jordan to emphasize his point. “See, I used to be married to that precious creature, and I hurt her. That my friend is something that should NEVER be done to a woman like that! I’m warning ya, she’s a woman who will get into your heart and soul and you will never want her out.” John stared Jordan in the eyes for what seemed an eternity. He tapped the table with his fist and turned to join Sami at their table.
She’s a devil, she’s an angel, she’s a woman, she’s a child
She’s a heartache, when she leaves you
But she’ll leave you with a smile
Marlena made her way back to the table, glad that Jordan had picked tonight to come visit her. She smiled as she thought of the way she was about to spend the night. Normally, she would have pulled her hair back, thrown on her jeans and t shirt and watched ‘Pocket Full of Miracles’ for the millionth time, all topped off with a bowl of chocolate mint chip ice cream. She’d noticed this was putting some weight on her, so any thing to get her out of the normal rut was a blessing in disguise.
Nearing the table she noticed the grin on her dates face. Raising her eyebrow in a wondering fashion she happily obliged him when he went to take her seat out for her. “Well, what has got you so chipper?” She smiled and helped him scoot her chair under the table.
Jordan took his place once again and nodded his head toward the direction of his ‘attacker’, trying to stave off the smirk that threatened to overtake his face. “Apparently, you have an admirer.” Marlena followed his gesture to the corner of the room where she found John’s back to her and Sami’s smiling face.
“Oh I see. Jordan would you excuse me please. I think I need to pay myĂ¢â‚¬âˆ« uh how did you say that, ‘admirer’, a little visit.” Marlena threw her napkin down on the table, Jordan knew that look and there was going to be hell to pay. He laughed at her angelic statement, and knew it hid a wrath that even the devil would admire.
Standing to be a gentleman, he watched her gracefully move toward her ex husband, concealing the fact that she was like a kid in a candy store and was about to get everything she needed. Jordan had to smile as she left. “Some things never change.”
When she held me, it was heaven
It was worth the losin’ pain
And when she’s gone, she’ll leave you wishin’, she’d just roll your way again
Sami’s laughter was ceased by the image of her mother just behind John. He’d just finished his story on how he told that guy off, putting in some ‘extra’ details for flair. Marlena put her finger to her mouth, and shook her head no, to warn Sami not to tell of her presence. Sami bit her lip and began to twirl her noodles around her fork, knowing her mom wasn’t pleased with her at the moment. Marlena decided to have some fun with John.
Leaning forward, she looped her arms around his neck and put her lips near his ear. John immediately knew it was her and stopped breathing. He knew that she’d heard all the things he’d been telling Sami, by the look on Sami’s face. He wanted to jump up and explain himself, but having her near him, with her arms around him, it was all he could do not to just sweep her off of her feet and kiss her then and there. Marlena’s eyes twinkled with mischievousness, something they had been missing since she’d been away from him. She felt his heart beating in his throat and knew her plan was working.
“John, I see you’ve met my date for this evening. Would you like to join us? I’m sure Maggie wouldn’t mind.” Her lips pursed together, stifling a grin, as she felt his heart pick up several beats when she spoke so close to his ear.
“Uh, Marlena, I…” John was having trouble breathing. “I had better take a rain check on that. I promised Sami here that we would have a nice dinner. Maybe sometime later huh?” His mouth ran dry and his hands began to drum on the table. Marlena put her hands on either side of his, and spoke much closer to him.
“Oh, okay, but you must come over and say goodnight.” She made sure to brush her lips to the side of his face as she said this. Straightening back up, she smoothed out her dress and waved bye to a stunned Sami.
“She’s good.” Sami never had seen this side of her mother, and she wasn’t so sure she hated it. Her attention drew back to John, who was stunned into silence. His hands still in the place she’d left them, his eyes focused ahead. He didn’t like the fact that she’d embarrassed him in front of his ‘daughter’, but to have her that close, he’d suffer embarrassment all over again and again.
She’s a devil, she’s an angel, she’s a woman, she’s a child
She’s a heartache, when she leaves you
But she’ll leave you with a smile
Jordan and Marlena finished their dinner, and were about to leave. John had come to his senses and had enjoyed his dinner with Sami. Turning to go, they spotted Marlena and her date leaving. Marlena turned and looked back over her shoulder at them. Her face lit up with glee as she turned toward them and tossed John’s watch back to him. Stunning him for a moment, he tried to figure out when she took the watch off of his hand.
“Remember John.” She put an extra sway in her walk as she turned to go, knowing he was watching her every move. With one more look over her shoulder, she was out the door. John’s heart wrenched with sadness as he watched her go. Then he caught what she said.
“Remember John?” Turning the watch over, he looked at the inscription. To JB, Thanks for giving me time, M. “What did that mean?” John furrowed his brow and bit the side of his cheek in intense thought. Then, like a bolt out of the blue it hit him. His face erupted in a smile, the smile he saved for her. He had given her time, and now it was time for them to return to the grandeur they once had held.
That’s Me (Every Chance I Get)- George Strait – Carrying Your Love With Me 1997
(Mark D. Sanders/ Ed Hill)
Picture a fella with his boots shined up
a new coat of clean on his pick up truck
Ringin’ your doorbell, thinkin’ about love
Hey, honey, that’s me
John looked at himself in the mirror. A new aura had taken over the previous one, and this one suited him much better. He somehow looked younger, more handsome, and even livelier. He had never felt like this before, the only thing that came remotely close was when he had gained his soul back on that fateful plane escapade. John made his way down the loft stairs, to be met by his daughter. Belle whistled and looked her father up and down.
“Ok, who are you and what have you done with my father?” John placed his hand on his hip and did, at best, the worst runway model impression Belle had ever seen, sending her into fits of giggles. His hair had been recently close cropped and the silvering at his temples only set the blue off in his eyes even more. He wore a striped shirt that hugged his muscular form with great ease. The khaki pants he wore gave him that certain youthful aire. To finish the look, the boots that adorned his feet had a bright sheen to them, showing great care had been taken to polish this look for his lady fair. Grabbing his trusty leather jacket, John threw it on and went to his daughter.
“Things are gonna be okay, Belle.” He kissed her forehead and hugged her to him for a moment. They walked out the door to his freshly shined SUV, no fact was overlooked to make this night one that was never to be forgotten. Starting the engine, John sent a silent prayer up, hoping that this would be where their roads converged.
Marlena had changed clothes five times in an hour. She just couldn’t get the perfect look for him. She wanted him to be totally blown away by her, but she didn’t want him thinking she had put too much time into her looks for this night. Finally, she settled for a short, light sheath dress in softest purple. She put her hair up and took the minimalist route with her jewelry. She was pleased with her choice and picked up the matching jacket, and headed down the stairs to wait on him.
She was pleasantly surprised to see Brady waiting at the end of the stairs, his hand extended toward her. “Well, do I pass?” She accepted his hand and finished the steps with his aide.
“Mother, I have never seen you look so beautiful! Dad is a fool if his socks aren’t knocked off.” Brady smiled and squeezed her hand in encouragement.
“Hmm, I wonder where he is? He’s usually so on time.”
That’s me with a capital M
That’s me ten times ten
I ain’t worked up my courage yet
But that’s me every chance I get
John fiddled with his watch, while waiting for the penthouse elevator to open. Belle couldn’t help but to smile at his nervousness.
“Has this elevator always taken this long?” John began to wring his hands in anticipation. Belle reached over and placed her hands on his.
“Dad, don’t take this the wrong way… but CHILL OUT!” John blew out a breath and patted his daughter’s hand. “Point taken.” The doors chimed as they opened and John felt his heart beating wildly in his throat. Belle exited the lift, looking behind her to make sure her dad followed. Taking his arm, she pulled him out. John cleared his throat and straightened his jacket. Lifting his hand to knock on the door, he pounded the air first, his courage not yet finding a way to come forth.
“Daaad…” Belle ushered him closer to the door. “She’s waiting.” The door vibrated under his fist and John took what had been many a deep breath again.

The movies had seemed to be the right place for them to go. A remembrance of days past, and when they had gone on their ‘first’ date. They snuck into the darkened theatre, stealing 2 seats in the last row. Marlena’s eyes widened in wonder, not knowing what she was about to see. The theatre’s dark interior brightened with the flicker of the projection on the screen. Noticing that not a soul sat in the seats around them, Marlena was transported back to the better days they had seen. Marlena’s mouth fell agape as she saw the movie title.
“I’m going to retire this movie.” She looked at John with knowing eyes. Bette Davis’ haggard appearance graced the screen and ‘Pocket Full of Miracles’ graced the silver screen.
“I know, Doc. You won’t ever have to be alone again, watching this old movie all by your self. Give me another chance and I will never let you be alone again.” John took her hand and pressed it to his lips. Marlena’s eyes filled with tears from the depth of his words. Reaching behind her, his arm draped over her shoulder, where it stayed throughout the movie, surrounding her in a wave love and emotion.
The movie’s credits began to roll and Marlena wiped her eyes, not certain if it was from the movie or the fact her life was becoming her own again. John reached over and stole a tear from Marlena’s cheek. Pulling her toward him, he leaned into kiss her. Marlena’s hand found his lips and stopped his progress. He looked up startled, and found her smile beaming at him.
“I’m hungry. Feed me.” She got up, pulling him up with her. Straightening her dress, she patted him on the cheek and brushed past him, careful to make contact with his body.

But that’s me every chance I get
I never delt with such a big deal, how to tell you how I feel
I’d be your fella in nothin’ flat honey just picture that
John found it very hard to concentrate on his food, let alone chewing, while setting across from her. She had wound her magic spell around him again and he relished in it. Her innocent smile splayed across her face, but the twinkle that sparkled in her amber eyes told a different story. She loved him and wanted him, but it was her turn to control the game, and John made himself let her. They ate in almost complete silence, the world around them disappearing. Just to be this close to each other made the world a happier place. John, finally, broke the silence, taking her hand in his. “Marlena, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for coming out with me, for giving us a chance.” He brought the dainty hand to his lips for a tender kiss, praying she wouldn’t stop his journey. Holding her hand there, taking in the sent of her, he became lost in the moment. His heart raced.
“What if she turns you down? You’ve done a great deal to her, John. Do you think one crazy night will make up for months of torture to her soul?” John’s mind screamed out the nightmares he had. Gripping her hand tighter, he looked her in the eyes, almost staring right into her. Swallowing, he begged his mind to say the right words and his heart to give him the boost he needed to get her back.
“Marlena, I was so wrong to let you go. I should have fought as hard for you as I did to find my past. I know I’ve heart you beyond measure and I know it will take time to forgive me. All I’m asking is for a chance. The past means nothing to me, if you are not in my future.” John’s voice came out in fierce tone, the determination for his words to reach her heart evident. Marlena put her hand to her mouth and stifled the sob that began to break from her lips. John, still holding her hand, got up and knelt beside her, removing her other hand from her face.
“Doc, I don’t want to make you hurt anymore. I want to be the one to put a smile on your face, to bring tears of joy to your eyes, to hold you when you need me. I want to be all those things. I know I have been a totalĂ¢â‚¬âˆ«”
“Moron?” John smiled at her assistance.
“Yeah, I guess that would be a good one.”
“How about putz, idiot, self centered dolt shall I go on?” John bowed his head in shame.
“Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. You know, I will do anything, anytime, anywhere to get your forgiveness. You just tell me when and where and I will be there.” He kissed her hands, and placed them back on her lap. Turning to go, he stopped in his tracks when he heard her speak.
“How about here and now?”
That’s me with a capital M
That’s me ten times ten
I ain’t worked up my courage yet
But that’s me every chance I get
That’s me every chance I get
Honey, that’s me every chance I get

We’ve got something that sure is fine
Let’s take our love one night at a time
John turned to see Marlena’s smiling face. Tears had softened her dark eyes, and made them shimmer like diamonds. Her hands reached out for him, and John fell to her feet, his head lying in her lap and his hands gripping her hands in a strong vice. Marlena freed her hands and pulled his face up to meet hers. His visage was soaked with tears, his body shook with the emotion she’d pulled from him. Marlena leaned forward and kissed the tears away from his cheeks, pulling herself into his arms. No words were spoken as John took her hand and they made their way to the car.
Silence wrapped its arms around the couple as they drove. Hands grasped each other with a passionate hold, and every so often were broken as Marlena wiped the tears that escaped her eyes. Then, John’s hand would find her knee, giving her the support she so desperately needed. The divorce had been finalized 3 months ago, making them free again, neither had a claim to the other, legally, but their hearts had fused together and were melded for life. Marlena grasped John’s hand and brought it to her lips, kissing it lightly, but holding it there for a few moments. John turned his hand over and caressed her face, looking at her adoringly.
“John…”
“Yeah, Doc…”
“Can you please watch the road or we are gonna make this a compact SUV.”
John questioned her only for a moment, and the blaring horn brought him to reality and he swerved to the correct side of the road. Marlena covered her mouth to cover the escaping giggles.
“Oh, so you thought that was funny, huh?” Marlena’s eyes glazed with tears once again, she shook her head ‘no’, but as the laughter bubbled up inside her, she nodded her head a vigorous ‘yes’. John elicited a laugh too, happy to hear the laugh that he’d put there, even though his heart pounded in his chest from fear.
“Doc, you have no idea how much I have wanted to hear that laugh. Had I known it only took me almost killing us, hey I woulda done it sooner.” They laughed and grasped hands once again, relishing the warmth they emitted.
There’s one thing that we both agree
I like you and baby you like me
Let’s take our love one night at a time
In the pent house, John and Marlena soon realized they had been set up. The whole house had a warm and romantic feel. The lights dimmed to a golden glimmer, pictures looking out at them with nostalgic faces. Lilacs poured from the huge vases that sat around the room, and emitted a heavenly smell. Marlena stood beside one of the pots of flowers, taking in its wonderful aroma. “MMM… nothing smells better than lilacs in a warm room.” John caught her arm and drew it out, intertwining her fingers with his. Starting at the dip of her elbow, John placed feather light kisses up to her shoulder, inhaling deeply as he neared her neck.
“Hmm, I can think of one thing that smells a whole lot better.” Marlena leaned her neck over to allow him further access, as he trailed the kisses up her neck to her earlobe, stopping to whisper his thoughts in her ear, causing a tingle to trickle down from the top of her head and down to her toes. Her breath caught in her throat as he wrapped his arms around her waist, capturing her hand within his own, still kissing and blowing on her neck.
“You do realize our children have set us up?” Marlena tightened her grip on his arms as he moved his lips travels down to her bare shoulders.
“Mmm…” John eyes lit up with a smile when Marlena’s knees buckled and she lost her balance for a moment.
“Joh… John!” She turned in his arms and clasped her hands behind his neck, arching her back so she was just out of reach of his eager lips. John straitened back up, his face showing the disappointed look that came with her stopping his seduction of his love. Tucking a stray hair behind her ear, she looked at him with a mixture of innocence and pure lust. Pulling him so close to her, daylight disappeared between them; she began to brush her lips across his jaw. John’s hands roamed her back and came to rest on her backside, tensing with the feelings she was evoking in him.
“John, I was just… ooo, you smell so good. I was just thinking that…” Her lips brushed his ear as she whispered soft and low, grinning as she heard the guttural groan escape his lips and his hands pull her to him even further.
“I was just thinking, ya know…” John let another sigh go as she began to sway in his arms.
“Doc, if you don’t quit thinking, I’m gonna have a heart attack!” Marlena’s lips curled into a smile, and she pulled herself even closer to him, watching the tiny hairs on his neck stand up.
“John, I’m thinking that, if you don’t make a move soon, I’m gonna have to find someone who will.” She pulled back away from him, a mischievous glint flecking her mahogany eyes. John’s mouth dropped with shock, as she patted his cheek and fled his arms. Taking cover behind the couch, she leaned forward and stuck her tongue out at him in jest, giving him a raspberry. John hopped over the facing couch and grabbed for her. Laughter peeled through the air, as she dodged his hands and made a break for the stairs.
Taking the stairs as fast as she could, she looked over her shoulder to see John tailing close behind her, her one step being matched with two of his. She reached the landing and took off toward the bedroom, hearing his footsteps match hers all the way. The bedroom door flew open and Marlena rushed inside, turning to stop her pursuer in his tracks. The door did its job and stopped John’s impeding track. Marlena’s laugh rippled through the door and touched his heart. Pushing against the obstruction, John managed to get his arm inside the door.
“Doc, you’d better just give up and let me in.” The arm waved in the air and came dangerously close to its destination several times. Marlena batted his hand away and scooted over closer to the door hinge.
“Now, John, I don’t think I should be playing so easy to get. What kind of self respecting woman would I be?”
“Ok, Doc. You win, I give up. I’ll see ya tomorrow.” Marlena’s brow furrowed in question as she heard his footsteps recede down the hall. Releasing her hold on the door, she peered out the opening and focused her eyes in the darkness.
“Boo!”
All night, love all night
Practice makes perfect gonna get it right
gonna get it right, one night at a time
John stifled a laugh as he saw Marlena jump back and yelp. Coming through the door, he tried to grab her to him, but Marlena walked backwards, holding out her arms to keep him at bay.
“Oh what’s wrong, Doc? Did I scare you? Oh come here, I will make it all better.”
“John, no John…” Marlena stumbled over the chest at the end of the bed and fell toward the floor. John rushed to her and caught her in his arms before she hit the floor, smiling down at her.
“Well, you caught me. Now what are you gonna do with me?” John leaned toward her and kissed the end of her nose, bringing a sigh to her lips. Before she knew what was happening, John slung her over his shoulder and carried her to parts unknown.
Eyeing the flowered tiles of the bathroom, her feet began to kick and her hands push away from John’s back. “John, don’t you even think of doing this.” Her pleas were answered with a trickle of water from the faucet and the beginnings of the spray from the shower.
“John, don’t! John…” Marlena kicked and tried to wriggle her way from him.
“Oh, Marlena. Just settle down, we will get you cooled off soon enough.” Marlena quit her quest to get away from him, pondering the words he just said. John moved quickly and stood her in the freezing spray of the showerhead. Marlena caught her breath and stood there motionless, her dress darkening a dark shade of purple with each drop of water. Lowering her head, she mumbled something, sniffing back tears. John leaned toward her; worried he’d hurt her. “Doc… Marlena. Honey, what’s wrong?” Marlena shook her head and covered her face with her hands, her shoulders shaking with emotion. John’s face became a mixture of guilt and worry.
“Doc, hey, come on talk to me.” Marlena pulled her face up to meet him. John tried to step back, but knew he was caught.
“Checkmate!” Marlena grabbed his shirt and pulled him into the stinging cold spray with her, capturing his mouth in a fiery kiss that burned straight to his very soul. John broke the kiss and looked deep into her smoldering eyes.
“Doc, you don’t play fair.”
“Who said anything about fair?” Once again, they became lost in their kiss, expressing all the passion, pain, and loss they had experienced in the 3 and half months they had been apart. The couple became oblivious to the cold rays of the shower, pelting their heated skin with cooling fingers. Their clothes had become heavy and soaked, impairing the exploration of each other’s bodies.
“You know, John, I think you’ve ruined my dress.”
“Hmm? Oh, well I guess I will have to get you a new one. Here let me take that for you.” John ran his hands up Marlena’s arms, relishing the goose bumps that flecked up as he inched up to her neck. Running his hands around her neck and back to the zipper, Marlena felt her knees weaken. Gripping John’s shirt, she pulled herself closer to him, feeling his breath mingle with hers. The zipper eased down under John’s care, letting it slide down to the shower floor, where it pooled around Marlena’s bare feet. John looked at Marlena’s face and became entranced. Her eyes were drowsy with desire and her mouth sought his with an almost heated desperation.
“Marlena…” John took her hands and brought them to his lips, kissing the knuckles that protruded from her fists.
“Hmm?”
“Aren’t you cold?” John’s smile lit up his face as he saw her begin to feel the shards of coldness on her body.
“Hey! Waddya say you take me outta here?”
“Uh uh. I… owe… you… one… night… of… my… unbridled… passion!” John made a trail of kisses on her as he spoke the words, enjoying the effect he had on her.
“In the shower?”
“Oh honey, this is just…” Pulling Marlena close to him, he captured her mouth with his own, feeling her grapple to keep her balance once again.
“This would just be practice.”
Oh, I think about you all day long
It feels so good, it can’t be wrong
I got my fingers crossed that this goes on and on
Tomorrow, well, that’s another day
Come on baby now whatta ya say?
Let’s take our love one night at a time
John and Marlena held each other, swaying in the stream of moonlight that seeped through the open doors. The air wrapped them in a scent of night and warmness. John pulled one arm up and wrapped it around her neck, stroking her damp hair.
“Doc, you know I was just thinking…”
“Uh oh, look where ‘just thinking’ got us before” She tilted her head up and looked him in the eye, her smile sparkling in the silver moonlight.
“Doc, I think we need to make a new start. You know what would be a nice new start?”
“A new car?”
“Nope”
“Hmm… a new house?”
“Possibly”
“Oh I know! A new wardrobe! Oh John, you just can read me like a book!” She bussed him on the cheek and went to her wardrobe, pulling things out of it. John’s mouth tried to say something, but refused to work at it. A silky nightgown hit him in the head, bringing him back to life.
“Now, Marlena, why would you think you’d need a new wardrobe? You have enough clothes to cloth China!”
“Well, I’ve been noticing that I have been putting on some weight, and while I would be happy to stuff myself into my jeans, I don’t think any child of yours would be too happy about that!”
“Doc, you’re not getting fat and I think any child of mine could care less…” John stopped mid sentence and mid stride. “What did you say?” Marlena tilted her head to the side and smiled.
“Did I stutter?” John dropped the nightgown and walked quickly to Marlena’s side, her hands smoothing over the slight roundness of her tummy.
“I didn’t say I was FAT! I just said I was gaining weight.” John’s eyes teared up as he came closer to her, his eyes shining pools of indigo. “Wha…When… How?” Marlena raised an eyebrow at his questions.
“John, if you don’t remember how then…” Marlena walked toward John with a deliberately slow pace. Reaching him, she wrapped her arms around his neck and tiptoed up to meet him. “I guess we will just have to jog your memory. You did say something about practice, right? How ’bout we try for the championship game?” John caught her head in his hands and she leaned back to tease him.
“I’m game if you are.”
“Let the best man win.” Coming together in a whirlwind of magic and passion, they stumbled their way to the bed. John laid his love down with a greater tenderness than he’s ever handled her with. Her eye’s misted when she caught the deep love and devotion that reflected in his eyes.
“Doc, you have no idea what a gift I have been given just in having you in my life. You are my reason for being; you are the light in my darkest days and my soul’s mate. Without you, I have nothing and I am nothing.” John positioned himself next to her and wrapped his arms around her, feeling the warmth that emanated from their bodies. Marlena snuggled next to his chest, reveling in the sound of his heartbeat.
“It was about 3 and a half months ago, the last time we were together, before we di…” The words choked in her throat and tears flooded her eyes. I found out not too long ago, right before I went to dinner with Jordan.”
“That explains the watch.” Marlena nodded her head and wiped the tears from her eyes. Placing her hand over John’s heart, she giggled as she felt his hand slide over her belly.
“Well, Dr. Evans, I do believe that you issued me a challenge that I intend to take. Something about a championship game… to hell with that, this is Olympic caliber!” John rolled over Marlena and looked into her eyes. She propped herself up on her elbows and kissed him quickly.
“I accept the challenge and look forward to…” a smile draped across her face. “Kicking your butt!”
“Oh you think so do you? Well, let me tell you love of my life, I intend to play this game until I win.”
“Oh, hmm. Well, I guess we will be having some practice sessions too huh?”
“Could be some long nights, you willing coach?”
“For you, always.” They met in an explosion of laughter and love, knowing that they were on their way to the glory they once held.
All night, love all night
Practice makes perfect gonna get it right
gonna get it right, one night at a time
