“Damn, what’s that noise?” For a minute there he didn’t recognize the sound near his ear. He opened his eyes and saw that it was Marlena’s phone. Before he could hand it over to her, she climbed over him and walked into the hallway with her phone. When she closed the bedroom door, he heard her say, “Hey,” very enthusiastically. It must be a very funny person, John thought, because usually Marlena hated it when people woke her up. He looked at his watch. It was ten o’clock, and he could feel a headache coming on. Was she lying to him or was he just suspicious? They had been going out for almost a year and he had always trusted her. But now it was as though something had changed. We had some coffee and after that the three of us went to the Chinese” John took a double-take – what did she say, the three of them?“Who else was with you?” The demand came out a bit angrier than he meant it to.“Tony… you know that guy that was at Luxor on Saturday. I told you I asked him to join us?” Again John felt that knot form in the pit of his stomach.“I can’t remember. This is crazy Marlena. You probably had him on the phone Sunday morning too, right? What the hell does he want from you?” “Nothing, why are you getting yourself so worked up? He’s nice and we went to elementary school together. We were just talking about the old days”
Marlena’s voice shivered, but John didn’t care. He wasn’t going to let this go. “I thought you and Laura wanted a girls-night-only. But he gets invited, so why couldn’t you have asked me too?” It stayed quiet on the other end of the line. Then she spoke in a very determined tone. ”Apparently you don’t trust me. Try to figure out why. I’ll see you sometime next week.”When John heard the dial tone, he tossed the phone in the corner of the couch. Tsss – Tony of elementary school. What a jerk!
Marlena kept her word. She ignored John for the whole week. John had waited, his mobile in his hands, hoping that she would call; but she hadn’t. She’s playing with you! You know what you should do? Go to Luxor tomorrow with another girl. Then she’ll feel it.” John thought that it was a brilliant idea. It couldn’t hurt to make Marlena a little jealous. He would see how much she still wanted him.“But how am I gonna get a date so soon?”“My sister will go with you. Marlena doesn’t know her anyway”
