The Blacks – By Unknown Author

We weren’t your average family, actually we weren’t a family at all.

We pretended to be a family.

Where do I start?

My name is John Black and I am your average realestate agent, two kids and a beautiful wife. That’s what the outside world sees.

The truth is, My name is John Black, I am sales man, no wife, no kids. No home really, explaining this will be hard but I’ll do my best.

It’s a process, they start by one interview, simple questions. Who I am, how old am I? What I’ve done in the past? My relations and if I’m still in touch with them.

42, managed a few businesses, my family is dead and those that are alive I have no contact with.

Second interview, that’s where I met her. They wanted to see our chemistry, if we would look good together.

We looked great together, she’s been in the business for five years, this is the first mission she’s taking on her own. Her rules her away.

I couldn’t stop staring at her hazel eyes, blonde hair down to the middle of her back, loose curls, layers around the face, blonde.

I heard her before I saw her, the sound her heels made on the hard concrete floors. She was on the phone making sure her plans g accordingly, then she walks into the room casually.

The black silk shirt, jeans and heels. She ran her fingers through her hair before ending the call, she extended her hand and apologised for taking so long.

“Marlena Evans, and you are?”

“John Black” I smiled back at her. I couldn’t help it. The gleam in her eye made my day.

“Well John I assume that you’ve been briefed?” She grabs the beige folder sitting on the large wooden desk.

“Yes, uh…”

Before I could ask she interrupted “And you’re aware of the details? No relations, the last person we had didn’t end so well”

She lifts her head to watch my reaction.

“Don’t worry Mr.Black” She laughs it off “I mean he couldn’t handle the pressure and had to leave the assignment, which you can imagine makes my job very hard.”

“When do we get started?” I ask without any hesitation.

“Tomorrow 7am we’ll be on the road. You’ll meet Isabelle and Brady. The car will be dropped to your hotel before then”

I smile and nod.

I hesitate before I leave.

My new life starts tomorrow.
